Subtitles software!

Hello guys - I got one more software request question here:

I got some videos with english as spoken language.

I'd like to show them to my wife (who does not speak english) abd to my father (who can read well, but has problems hearing); Hence, I'd like to add subtitles.

Do you guys know any software I can use to add text to the videos?

A subtitles file is basically a text file with every line beginning with a timecode. So really, all you would need is notepad and instructions on the format.
