Excerpt from.... HIPPO'S BOOK OF PLANET

PLANETFALL! Eager Spartanian citizens flock into the streets of Sparta Command! The Paranoid Colonel Corazon Santiago watches with glee as her loyal followers grab their uzis, glocks, and 9's and begin shooting up the rugged, rainfall deprived territory. Free ammo is supplied, courtesy of Spartan Ammo Inc.

Mission Year 2101: With Sparta Command firmly established upon Planet, a Scout Rover batallion is dispatched to investigate a nearby Pod Beacon. Surprise! To Santiago's dismay, it is merely a resupply pod worth 25 energy credits. The Rover presses on into the xenofungal unknown....

A promising young Talent by the name of Hippo is promoted to Vice-Colonel, and immediately declares a 25% reduction in price on all imported Bazookas!

Mission Year 2102: Something to appease the intellectuals, and occupy their thoughtful days...Hippo thinks long and hard before ordering the pursuit of Social Psych (B1) that Recreation Commons might shut up the dissenters within, and that maybe, just maybe, the Glorious and Violent Spartainian Federation might uncover the Secrets of the Human Brain first! Take that, Provost!

Mission Year 2103: A minerals pod is uncovered by the valiant Scout Rover, allowing for the completion of a second Scount Patrol unit to defend Sparta Command.

Mission Year 2104: Hippo naps in peace. Weapons sales continue to rise, despite lack of enemies.

Mission Year 2105: Exploration continues as two Scout units ascend a rather large mountain. No volcanic activity here, unfortunately . A feasable Base site is discovered by the second Colony pod.

Mission Year 2106: Monolith uncovered! Make sure it's inside the damn radius! Decrees Vice Colonel Hippo, as the colonizers approach their destination.

Mission Year 2107: Heros Waypoint becomes the second Spartanian Base on Planet, just squares away from the Headquarters. To Hippos delight, the trailing Scount Rover uncovers ENERGY resources and an Alien Artifact just miles away from the city centre!

Mission Year 2108: The Spartan Federation makes its first technological breakthrough on Planet! (Unfortunatly, the University made Planet's first breakthrough in 2105) Mind worm aggression in the North marrs an otherwise pleasent year, but the rowdy group of Scout Rovers make quick work of their psych-@$$es, gathering 10 energy credits from husks, and reached VETERAN status! Hippo awards each with a new laserproof vest.

Mission Year 2109: Applied Physics is the FUTURE! Declares Spartan State Radio, after a meandering Scout Patrol uncovers this precious data within a Unity Pod. Not long after this, the station is broadcasting live feed as Colonel Corazon Santiago makes First Contact with Sister Mirian Godwison of the Lord's Believers! The ignorant Believers request Applied Physics in exchange for their world map. Stuff it, declares Santiago! The last thing these fanatics need is new and improved weaponry! A Treaty of Friendship is signed, however, and Borders are established on the West Side of what appears to be the Freshwater Sea. The Artifact is stored in Heros Waypoint.

Mission Year 2110: Another Alien Artifact is uncovered by the valiant Scout Rover.

Mission Year 2111: Centauri Ecology! In all it's terraforming glory. Engineers in Sparta Command propose new units with which to build roads (that we might reach New Jeruselum with greater swiftness, suggests Hippo maliciously). More Mind Worm presence in the Northern Xenofungus, but they are easily disposed of by our Veteran Rover.

Mission Year 2112: Again and again! Everywhere you think Mind Worms are there to disrupt the thought process! The Spartanian Paramilitary Legion dispaches these menaces, so that the citizens might stay safe within their Bases.

Mission Years 2113-2116: The Age of Exploration. Hippo sends troops out in different directions to map the immediate area. Two Colony Pods can be expected within 5 or so years. The Citizens rejoice with a massive 'War Games' day in the streets of Sparta Command. Hippo looks on, and wonders what the future will bring.

Good start hippo! My prediction on the next turn: The next commander shall bring good infrastructure to the Spartan Empire Ah, And now the epic tale continues...

Better even than the start was the story you put with it - I'm going to have to try quite hard to keep up with that

Thanks You probably won't have to fill in all the 'white noise' that I did (there isn't much to talk about when you have two units and 10 squares explored )

It's in your mailbox, Dreadhead....

Got it, Hippo, and I'm finished. I hand wrote the log notes, so give me a little bit to transcribe.

Exerpt from Viva Spartania
Vice-Colonel Dread. M.Y. 2117-2137

“Well, I’m out of here,” said Vice-Colonel Hippo, as he took one last look around. “You’ve seen the files, and you know where everything is, so carry on, Dread.”
“Yes Sir,” said the new replacement, a short woman whose most striking attribute was her waist-length dreadlocks.
Hippo smiled wryly, and shook his head as he left. “That’s one strange Spartan there,” he thought. “More geek than soldier.” “Can fight like hell, but doesn’t like to.” “She’s got guts, though, which is why Colonel Santiago put her here.” He’d heard the stories about her, how she could kill a mind worm boil single-handedly, and how she’d once calmly pulled a single mind worm out of her hair, then, held it to her face until the last minute, before ripping it two, and flinging it back into the fungus. “Yep,” said Hippo, aloud. “One strange Spartan, indeed….”

2117—Gave orders to send the Alien Artifact to Sparta Command. Scouts exploring North of Hero’s Waypoint reported seeing another Unity pod, but decided to wait before examining it.

2118—Scouts decided to check out the monolith near Hero’s Waypoint. It seems that they can repair worn equipment…

2119—“Mind worm boil just outside,” radioed Sgt. Casarez, from the tower at Hero’s Waypoint. “Got it,” said Dread, who quickly did away with the small boil. The colony pod was ready to go, but Dread decided to wait for an escort, which was on its way. “No use losing folks to the worms”, she thought. “And we’d better get working on a former too, because we need some decent roads around here, and I’m tired of that fungus.” She broke out of her reverie. “Come on, Laird,” she said, nodding at a pretty blonde. “Help me got those planetpearls while the worms are gone.”

2120—“We’re almost ready with the colony pod,” radioed Travis, from Sparta Command. “Give it a little bit.” “When its ready, send it East,” radioed Dread. “The scouts are saying that the high country over there is prime real estate.”

2121--“Repairs are finished here at the monolith,” radioed Sgt. Takahashi, the rover commander. “I’m going to head out with the folks and the colony pod.”

2122—The artifact arrived safely at Sparta Command, and a Unity pod Northwest of Sparta Command was found to contain energy resources.

2123—The colony pod at Sparta Command is ready, and has headed east, as ordered. Sparta Command is now working on a former, so that new roads and farms can be built.

2124—A new base, Hawk of Chiron, is founded! The citizens hold a small celebration, then, set about securing the base.

2125—Hawk of Chiron is secured, and they have decided to build a former so that a road can be built to connect Hawk of Chiron to Hero’s Waypoint, and Sparta Command.

2126—The former is ready at Hero’s Waypoint, and Dread asks the local contactors to began building a Recreation Commons. “After all”, she thought, “we’ve got to keep the folks happy.”

2127—Spartan State Radio announced that a new technology called Information Networks has been discovered, and that scientists are now working on something called Nonlinear Mathematics, which will allow us to build better and stronger weaponry. “Hate to break it to you,” said Dread to the contractors at Hero’s Waypoint. “But I want you to build a Network Node, instead of the Recreation Commons, and I want it to be done as quickly as humanly possible, so I’m going to allocate some funds towards this.” “When we’re finished, we can link that artifact to it, and download the files within, which give information on new technologies.” The contactors grumbled a bit, but Dread promised them that the rec. commons would be built as soon as the Node was finished.

2128—The colony pod from Sparta Command has almost arrived at its destination.

2129—Miriam is again on the LiveLink, which is broadcast throughout Spartania. She wants our files on Centauri Ecology in exchange for her maps. “Yeah”, Dread decides. “I want to know where she is, anyway.” Then, Miriam demands the files on our new tech, Information Networks. “You’d better skip down the Yellow Brick Road to Hades, old bat,” snapped Dread. “Do your own research!” “Well, wheedled Miriam, “Can we sign a Pact of Sisterhood?” “Sister who?” replied Dread. “No, honey, we don’t do pacts around here.” “Good day.” Miriam signed off grumbling something about friendship being a two way street, but Dread paid her no attention.

2130—The colony pod from Sparta Command has safely reached its destination.

2131—Spartan State Radio announced that the Gaians have discovered a new technology known as Secrets of the Human Brain, and that this discovery has stimulated more research. “Darn!” muttered Dread. “Oh, well…”
“I see some mind worms coming up kinda close,” radioed Sgt. Casarez again, from the tower at Hero’s Waypoint. “Yeah, I see,” replied Dread. “I’m going to tell Davis on the former to head back.” “I don’t want any casualties.”
Meanwhile, a new base, Militia Station, has been founded. There’s no time for celebrations, as some of Miriam’s troops are in the area, and it’s decided to secure the base first, and party later.

2132—Militia Station is secured, and the Mayor has decided to build a new colony pod, and send it south, hoping to stop Miriam’s lightening fast expansion.

2133—Hero’s Waypoint is attacked by mind worms, but the scout defends ably, and is promoted to Veteran. Dread gives him a new glock, and an Uzi as a reward.

2134—Construction of the road to Sparta Command has resumed.

2135—Work continues on the road to Sparta Command, and scouts continue to explore the area Northwest of Hawk of Chiron.

2136—The former is ready in Hawk of Chiron, and construction of the road to Hero’s Waypoint has begun.

2137--A new former is ready in Sparta Command, and construction of a road and farms leading to Militia Station has commenced. The contractors have begun work on a new rec. commons.

“Well,” thought Dread, as she began packing her things, and preparing for her new assignment. I haven’t done too badly around here, and it was actually kind of nice. She knew that she’d like this next assignment, because it involved working with mind worms…

Hey, Hippo, I hope you didn't mind me putting you into my story. I thought it would be good for continuity.

Sukenis, the game is on it's way to your mailbox...

Great story Dread! I think the various writing styles may well rival the playing styles for variety and 'personal touch'ality.

Good work on the whole 'Protect the colonies' issue. We've so far gone undefeated against mindworms! It will be key for us to box the Believers in, so that when we do decide to finish off this heavily armed menace, we can attack from all sides without fear of a sneak attack from the back.

Sisterhood? Yeah right! Friendship is a two way street indeed!

Nice job dread! Looke like we're in a good postion to expaned and build up the ol' troops eh?. I dont know much bout sukenis but i have a feeling were gonna runa into another faction next turn. Oh and whoever gets the op. DONT forget to pop boom!

Yes, I think that there is much room for expansion. I do think that some of that expansion should be towards Miriam. She will definately have to be contained and dealt with.

Yep, I think we're going to meet another faction soon, real soon. I wonder who it wil be?

Hopefully a 'helpful' faction that we can use to gain some tech (Univ) or maybe some 'lucrative trading arrangements (Morgan) I'd rather not have the Hive to deal with, since we're already tight with an Aggressive faction.

Hey Dreadhead, why don't you post a zipped attachment with your saved game? I'm going to upload some screenshots, but can't figure out how to condense my file.

For whenever nobody is left:
SEND IT HERE

It is not my e-mail address, but that of some acquaintance living a few thousand miles away (I have direct access to it).

Time to re-install SMAC...

EDIT: My poor, foreign spelling

Hippo, I take it you mean zip my game files, right? I'm dog tired, so I'm not getting things too correctly. Sukenis e-mailed me to say that he couldn't open the file, or something, and suggested that I zip it, which I did. I should have thought of that anyway, but I did send him a zipped copy of the saved game a few minutes ago, so I hope that everything is ok.

I'm curious, how do you take screenshots? Does that involve using the Print Screen key? I've never done this before, and would be curious to know.

And, yes, I do hope that we meet up with Morgan or the University. The last thing that we need is to run into Yang. Somehow, I have the feeling that we may meet up with Deirdre next.

Well, with my computer I press command+shift+3 , but I doubt that's what you're supposed to do Windoze ain't my specialty, but I'm sure someone knows. (feel free to tell us)

Yeah, if you could zip a game file and go 'add attachment' in the posting screen it would be nice for us to see what's happening. I'll try and get some stuff up tomorrow.

Ok, I'll try it. I'll upload the saved game as a zip file, and see how that works. I did check the file attributes, and "archive" was checked, but nothing else. I had no problems opening the file when you sent it to me, but I had saved it directly to the SMAC "save" file, so that all I had to do was start the game and load it.

Hmmm. I just tried to upload the zipped game file, but I got a message saying that I could only upload image files. How do I get around this?

Please forgive me. I am next in line and have had problems downloading the file from home. I got it today at work and will play it tonight and send it on tomorrow. I Believe BVD is next.

Low and behold, I get to work and realize that I did not bring the game with me. I will send it tomorrow morning at the latest. Sorry for holding the game up.
