Anyone else have 26 enemy ships suddenly appear out of nowhere? This has happened to me 4 separate times now, each time it has been exactly 26 ships. The third time one of them showed up in a lake inside of my boarders.

Other than Norway and sometimes Vicky, I rarely see an ai invest so much into fleets even on a water map.

Who owned the ships? Maybe Victoria sea dogs have been very busy.

I have seem Hojo have 6 and Of all people Tomyris have similar.
Oh and Brazil often has a damn batleship that surprises me and a couple of subs
I would never take 26 ships, it would break the bank and my will to push them around an empty sea.

This seems like he was trying to make some obscure reference or something.

I was referring to the AI, not you personally, Victoria. :D

Pietato, sea dogs are the English version of privateers, only a heck of a lot better. I may have the name wrong, but I am pretty sure its sea dogs. I am sure Victoria will correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think OP is talking about the AI building these ships. It sounds more like they literally appear out of nowhere.

It would be nice if we had more info. I don't think the ships could appear out of nowhere, someone had to build them. Possibly barbs, with their uber production.

The OP seems to have abandoned the thread; we probably should as well.

I my games I see quite a few barb ships. If they could be captured, it would be a likely solution. Guess your response shoots that one down.

Oh I know what they are. I meant the OP was making some weird reference that no one got.

I play a lot of navy games unsurprisingly and you are guaranteed to face some barb navies. I have even come across 5 quads in a group. Grouped quads can be surprising and take out a galley quite happily so I never move full distance in one action. There always pops up a couple of quite early barb caravels which can catch you off guard and weak. Normally after that you are stronger and more paranoid about civs having things like subs so when you encounter barb ones its just like they were a civs.

If you are going to perform a naval encounter and have the time, scouting the local area for barb ships can limit upsets and I try and do it if I remember.

Once frigates are underway I will remember where a barb cluster is hiding roughly and send a few frigates up there to get a level of experience quickly and blast any barbs along the way. So these barb clusters are a pain until get you some strength and then they have some use.

Privateers are great because you can shoot barbs from outside their visibility so you do not have to send up a bunch

it appears to me that he realized those enemy ships are just units travelling over water, would explain the lake thing.
