Hi, I've been browsing for a while and I finally have a good reason to post. I downloaded vanilla civ IV from aspyr, and it's been working well considering my hardware. However, for no apparent reason today, when I click on the civ IV icon, I get a popup saying, "XML Load Error: Failed Loading XML file assets//XML\GameInfo/CIV4PlayerOptionInfos.xml."

Anyone know how this happened/how it can be fixed? Thanks a bunch.

of course, there was no reason to post. the app suddenly appeared and it is working.

Welcome to the active forums.

Glad we could help.

ok for some reason it's doing it again. does this have anything to do with the fact that I downloaded it from aspyr? There has to be a reason, it can't be random. Thanks muchly

I am observe = awesomeness.

thanks for the reply. no im on a mac OS X, macbook. The only thing that has changed is that I have shut down my computer and started it up since I last played it. and the user that i am signed in as is the computer admin. thanks

does anyone know why this could be happening?

1. Vanilla Civ IV
2. No Mods
3. Downloaded from aspyr
4. Worked for a while, then had this problem, then randomly worked again
5. Then I restarted my computer while installing updates for microsoft office, the only thing that I've really done with my computer thats major in between the smooth running and not loading.
6. macbook OS X

Thanks!

Well, I don't really know why that would be happening. But if it was me, I'd first check the accuracy of your original quote. "assets//XML\GameInfo/CIV4PlayerOptionInfos.xml" sounds bogus to me, because of the mixture of double slash, single slash, and backslash. It's a mess. Secondly, I'll check to see if that file exists, and open the file to see if it looks corrupt.

I'd that you make sure you have the latest version of the game — the latest patch from the official civ4 website. If that .xml file is missing or corrupt (and you have the latest patch) then you can get someone to upload their version of the file. It's a pretty ordinary file, so anyone's should do. If that path name with all the weird slash combinations is actually accurate, I'd be interested to know why that was happening. Clearly the only happens sometimes... so it's a bit strange. It could be a Mac specific problem. I know Macs typically use forward slash for path names and Windows use backslash (but often it doesn't actually make any difference). So you could try searching for information about the problem on google or on mac website about games or something.

That's all I can think of at the moment. The patch is the first thing to check.

If you haven't already, open Disk Utility and run both Verify Permissions and Verify Disk. Sometimes a new install/update screws up unrelated support files and/or permissions. If either function reports anything abnormal, run the corresponding repair function. You can run repair permissions with no worries but if you run repair disk, backup your hard disk first!
