Sue for peace

I didn't think you could get anything other than a peace treaty while your troops were in enemy territory, but I got 50 gpt and an alliance against anther civ. How can this be?

You always get a lot more if your troops are in enemy territory. It scares the AI more.

I don't think it makes any difference whether you have troops in their territory or not- the AI will still give you gold or technologies or cities etc in a peace agreement.
In fact having troops close to their cities may even encourage the AI to pay you more for peace(not sure about this). Of course, if you still have troops in their territory and don't sign ROP, they'll probably ask you to leave.

I sue for peace all the time and then break it again. Do it too often and the AI gets wise. Now the AI calls me a thief. Well maybe I am but I'm also about to take his capital again.
