Sueing for peace

Anyone have any tips for maximizing gains when sueing for peace? I seem to rarely get anything valuable, tech-wise. Usually I either get gold or capitulation.

- attack a civ who is normally ready to trade techs (not toku)
- take a few cities, kill the main stack

Having a MASSIVE army intact that has already taken over cities and decimated the bulk of the enemy's army goes a long way.

Basically, you need to have done serious damage, and it needs to be obvious that you can do a lot more immediately.

Hmmm, that's what I generally try to do. I didn't realise it was dependent on tendency to trade techs, though, that's new to me.

Yeah, sometimes you have to fight longer than you might want to in order for them to acquiesce. Of course, if you're at war with a lunatic like Toku or Monty or something, they may never give up.
