haughty & over-confident
I'm slowly (college/social life/bad PC) making a detailed (362x362) WWII scenario. Actually I've been casually screwing around with it for months and just recently started taking it more seriously, to get it done and over with and played before Civ4 comes out. I was hoping that since everyone's made such a scenario, they could offer some advice.
Should I have fewer players, or have every country as a player, or walk that fine line in the middle? At first, I had Allied, Axis, Neutral players, but that seemed too simple. Then I had All countries except Ireland and Switzerland and Bulgaria and Slovakia, but that seemed to complicated. So now I have all the major countries as separate players, and also Portugal, Hungary, Sweden, Iran, and Romania, but not Bulgaria or Slovakia or Egypt or Iraq or Switz. or Ireland. Do you think it would be better to represent those countries, or leave them controlled by Britian/Germany to keep the effect more realistic? I'm thinking about not having anything in Switzerland, just a bunch of mountains and lakes with no cities. Ireland is British and Bulgaria & Slovakia are German.
I have it starting at January 1941, after the Nazis have kicked the Allies out of W Europe & set up Vichy France, but before they've come to totally dominate the Balkans and Italy. Is that a good place to start so the course of the war isn't completely predestined, or should I move it to June 1941 when the Balkans are firmly Axis and the pro-Axis rulers in Egypt and Iraq are gone?
Is it better to have a detailed map, like what I have, that focuses on Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, or would it be better (since it is 362x362) to span the Atlantic to the eastern US and Canada, or west into Afghanistan, Sinkiang, and British India, or farther south to inclide Abyssinia and more European holdings in Africa? I think if I make it too expansive I'm very easily going to reach the 512 limit on cities...
I have it so that various contries can produce American units (Soviets can make Shermans, British can make 155mm Long Toms) with certain resources and techs. Is that a good idea, or would it be much easier to keep the bloody Yanks out of it? Similarly, I have it so that most countries can make foreign units from Euro countries (Turks can make T-26s, Hungarians can make Me-109s, Soviets can make Matildas, etc...) because that way it's more realistic, and some countries didn't manufacture all their own equipment so players like Portugal and Turkey wouldn't really have some things unless they can make imports. Of course, these countries need to have certain resources from the host country (German Aid, Italian Aid, etc.) to make them, so it is still dependant on international relations (that way Finland can't make StuGs if things with Germany go sour). Is that pushing the limits of what can be done in a scenario?
I'm just starting to get into making this and I've never made anything this big before, so I don't know if I'm biting off more than I can chew... If you've tried something like this, please let me know if I'm taking on something too big!
Also, are there ways I can make the war something more than capturing cities, so that there is fighting in the countryside as well? Would placing a ton of VP locations effect AI strategy, or will it just go after cities no matter what?
