Superheroes!

A chance missed for another actor to make the role his own, like Robert Jr nailed it for Starks.
Junior is MCU's most bankable actor.
A very expensive signing, but one that will deliver (Oppenheimer, oscar winner) and bring the masses.

Show will bridge the gap between 'The Batman' movies -

Animation dept. takes a different approach -

I was browsing the voice-cast of Caped Crusader. Some interesting surprises. The person doing Batman, and who seems to have modeled the voice on Kevin Conroy's version (which is the right call, imho) is Hamish Linklater. Deidrich Bader is playing Harvey Dent. When I think of Bader, I always think of his character - and his voice - in Office Space, even though I know that isn't how he normally talks. He was such a riot in that movie, it's stuck in my head all these years later. I also see that Minnie Driver is playing 'Oswalda' Cobblepot. They've gender-flipped The Penguin.

The new Doom Avengers films seem like they'll be pretty crowded if the Fantastic Four are in them too. I can't imagine that they'd appear only as glorified cameos.

Yes, a notable number of these MCU movies are far too packed with characters are supposed to have significant roles, but none, save a few, and the main villain, get full justice. Like this early example of the dubious movie-making style:

I thought Infinity War and Endgame worked well. Partly they managed all of the characters by making Thanos the central character, but also by relying on the audience's preexisting familiarity with all of the characters. They could skip a lot of the things that normally makes having such a large cast almost impossible. For example, the Guardians characters were introduced with the opening bass notes of "The Rubberband Man" by The Spinners. Boom, everybody watching was situated inside the change of scene. (It was kinda brilliant, really.) I wouldn't want Doomsday and Secret Wars to follow exactly the same template - in fact, I'll be really annoyed if it's a retread - but it proves it can be done. We'll have gotten The Fantastic Four by then. It's unclear who else is likely to be in those Avengers movies. Anthony Mackie is the only one I'd say is a no-brainer. Beyond him, they have a ginormous stable of "could bes." Tom Holland? Could be. Chris Hemsworth? Could be. The Benedicts? Could be. The Young Avengers (Hailee Steinfeld, Xochitl Gomez, Iman Vellani)? Could be. The Thunderbolts? Could be. Simu Liu & Awkwafina? Could be. Brie Larson & Teyonah Parris? Could be. Larson feels unlikely to me, but I think a strong case could be made for Parris. I think The Eternals are going to go the way of The Inhumans. Ironheart seems like an outside shot to me, but if her show really hits, then sure, they could get her in there. Wonder Man feels like a real long shot, but again, if that's a smash-hit, they'll figure it out. I haven't sensed a great tide of affection for Shuri as Black Panther, so I'd be surprised if she finds a way in. Likewise the Disney+ and formerly-Netflix characters (Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Daredevil).

Casting Downey Jr. as Doom suggests to me that they want and intend for that character to be onscreen a lot over the next few years.

---

What I would do (not to say this is a prediction, but I'd certainly be pleased if Feige & Co come up with something along these lines): Dump Eternals; if Thunderbolts, Ironheart, Wonder Man and/or Agatha hit, give them a sequel; do Young Avengers; and revive all of the Netflix characters (bring back Jessica Henwick & Simone Missick for Daughters of the Dragon; plus Krysten Ritter and Mike Coulter; and I would also bring in Alaqua Cox - I didn't think Echo was a homerun, but I did like her and the character). I wouldn't bring any of those characters into Doomsday, but any of them could make cameos in Secret Wars, just to illustrate the scope of what's happening. Doomsday would an Avengers roster of Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Wong, Shang-Chi, Monica Rambeau and Captain Marvel if Brie Larson will do it (right now, I'd be surprised if she did, but never say never). I'm annoyed that there isn't another woman who's an obvious choice, but there isn't another woman who's an obvious choice. You could squeeze in Charlize Theron, if you want to, but that doesn't fire my engines. I love Theron, but Clea just isn't a part of the MCU right now, and I don't see a good opporunity to give her a proper introduction between now and then. Personally, I'd bring in She-Hulk. I know the show didn't go over well, but I liked it. I like the character, and I love Tatiana Maslany. She-Hulk is also a longtime Avenger in the comics, so you'd be adhering to some canon by including her, and I think this version of the character would fit nicely with the other characters (she'd also look better onscreen than she did in the show). Finally, if I were in charge, Secret Wars would introduce the new iteration of The X-Men. Actually, you can call that last part a prediction, not just "what I would do."

--

A story I read somewhere said the Russo Bros. are getting $80 million, plus escalators if the movies hit $750m and $1b box office; and Robert Downey Jr. is getting even more than the Russos are. I think the same article estimated that Downey Jr. has made half-a-billion on his MCU movies so far. Stomach-churning numbers.

"The Rubberband Man" by The Spinners, if you don't recall it.

DC Studios Debuts New Logo That Evokes Classic Design From ’80s and ’90s

DC-Studios-logo.jpg

DC Comics chief Jim Lee debuted a new logo for DC Studios on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con that returns to the design the company used from 1976 to 2005, replacing the logo first adopted in 2016.

Starting in 1976, the comics publisher’s logo — which appeared in the top left corner of virtually every issue — was a circular badge with its two letters surrounded by a thick black circle, inside of which contained four white, five-pointed stars. In 2005, DC updated the logo to a more modern looking design: a single star swirling around slanted DC letters. In 2012, the logo was changed again, turning the “D” into a page peeling back to reveal the “C” — a somewhat controversial design that was replaced in just four years to the most recent version, which simplified the logo to block DC letters surrounded by a simple circle. That logo was also put in front of DC’s feature film adaptations, which will reboot with James Gunn’s “Superman” in 2025.

The update comes as DC is refashioning itself into a more holistic media company, with Gunn and Peter Safran taking the reins at DC Studios to oversee all scripted adaptations of DC comics across film, TV, animation and video games.

In a video message played during the panel, Gunn joked about the decision to resurrect the old logo came to be.

“I can pretend we worked long and hard on what that was,” he said. “But the truth is we knew what we wanted the logo to be when we were put in charge of DC Studios.”

Lee hosted his third annual panel at San Diego Comic Con on Friday. He was joined by comic book writers Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson and Tom King to first discuss upcoming DC comics storylines, including an all new Absolute Universe. The Absolute versions of classic DC characters, like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, will be slight reinventions of the iconic heroes and serve as jumping-on points for new readers. It will serve as an alternate universe to the main DC comics line, similar but different to the Elseworlds and DC Black Label worlds.

Kang out, Doom in, Major upset...

Jonathan Majors 'Heartbroken' Over Robert Downey Jr. Doom Reveal: 'I Love Kang'

"Doctor Doom is wicked though."

images

Jonathan Majors was approached on the street and shared that he was "heartbroken" over the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom in the MCU. Furthermore, he still loves Kang the Conqueror and would return as the villain if that's what the fans and Marvel would want.

"Yeah, heartbroken," Majors said about how he was feeling after the reveal. "Of course, I love him. I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked though."
He was then asked about Downey and Ezra Miller's criminal history and how he felt that they were given chances to return to Hollywood despite that.

"I think it's fair that Mr. Downey is being and has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love and that Mr. Miller has gotten the same treatment and that they're being allowed to work their art and be creative at that level," he responded. "I didn't really get that."
"Yeah, heartbroken. Of course, I love him. I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked though.

“Lastly, he was asked if he would want to return as Kang the Conqueror in the future.
"Kang? Hell yeah, hell yeah, hell yeah. I love him. That's what I said, I love him. I love Kang, I love [Victor] Timely, I love He Who Remains. Love him. If that's what the fans want. If that's what Marvel wants, let's roll. yeah."

Majors was arrested on March 25, 2023, for charges of strangulation, assault, and harrassment after a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. After a few delays, Majors was found guilty of the two counts of assault and harassment and was acquitted of the charges of intentional assaults in the third degree and aggravated assault in the second degree. Majors plead not guilty to all accounts.

He avoided jail time but was sentenced to a year of counseling. Additionally, Majors' attorneys said, "we are optimistic that Mr. Majors will work in the film industry again soon." He was set to star in Magazine Dreams from the Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures, but the studio quietly sold the rights to the film and chose not to release it. He may soon have his first way back, however, as Majors was recently cast in Martin Villeneuve's Merciless.

As for Downey's Doctor Doom, he will be the villainous star of May 2026's Avengers: Doomsday (which was previously known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, which will be directed by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame's the Russo brothers.

Pretty crass of Majors to compare himself, convicted for assault, to RDJ, who did drugs and the like, but also spent a good while out of Hollywood to the extent that Marvel had to be persuaded to cast him as Iron Man.

The new Doom Avengers films seem like they'll be pretty crowded if the Fantastic Four are in them too. I can't imagine that they'd appear only as glorified cameos.
Depends how well they get to build up the these last two movies. I don't know who's seen Deadpool and Wolverine yet, but despite the bucketload of cameos, it actually used several characters pretty darn well.
Spoiler :
I knew Pyro would be central when I saw that Aaron Stanford (Pyro's actor) had title sequence billing. They did him a fair amount of justice, they did Cassandra Nova a ton of justice, and others ranged between "nice callbacks" to "and they're dead" (but in a funny way).
Definitely not for everyone, and the movie 100% beats the fourth wall horse with a stick into the dust, but a solid entry into the Deadpool movie vehicle and a surprisingly good send-off for various Fox properties.
Spoiler :
To this day I don't think I've watched the Elektra movie, despite watching Affleck's Daredevil more than once - voluntarily! And yet I enjoyed Elektra's time in this.

Absolutely nothing to do with binging Alias with the better half recently. Well, maybe something to do with it. I've always liked Garner, even in the series of romcoms she's been in.

Avengers vs. Aliens cross-over preview -

and

Predator Vs Black Panther -
Dark Horse comics loved to arrange these crossover with the Xenomorph Universe, whom Dark Horse held the comic rights from Fox21 for a long time (they also held the Star Wars right for quite a while, and put out some very interesting products that, sadly, were officially decannized with the rest of the old franchise, and which Disney does not seem to have tapped). This was a classic example:

Just watched Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. I don't think it rates more than a 2, maybe 2.5, out of 10. They didn't have that good of a story to tell, or do a very good job with the story they had. The special effects pretty well made it clear that they didn't know how to simulate doing things under water. And they didn't know about any divisions between being under water or not. Momoa comes across as a good actor, despite a bad script. Amber Heard, after the raking she took in the public media, seemed like they wanted to minimize her character as much as they could without either recasting it or killing the character off. Other supporting actors did decent jobs, seems to me. I don't think you can blame anything which went wrong with this movie on the actors, or the performances they turned in. The story just wasn't there to work with.

Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel's most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.

89 Batman novel sequel:

(Time-line wise, it's Batman '89 -> Batman: Resurrection -> Batman Returns -> The Flash.)

41eoDphy0EL.jpg

After The Joker's death, Batman and Gotham City face a mysterious new threat in this direct sequel to Tim Burton's iconic Batman.
The Joker is dead, but not forgotten. Gotham City is saved, but it is still not safe. By night, its new symbol of hope, Batman, continues his fight to protect the innocent and the powerless. By day, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, wonders whether there may someday be a future beyond skulking the city's rooftops or the cavernous halls of his stately manor alongside the ever-dutiful Alfred Pennyworth.

But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime's imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement. Remnants from The Joker's gang are leading wannabes fascinated by his bizarre mystique on a campaign of arson that threatens the city--even as it serves greedy opportunists, including millionaire Max Shreck. And survivors of exposure to The Joker's chemical weapon Smylex continue to crowd Gotham City's main hospital.

To quell the chaos, Batman needs more than his cape and his well-stocked Utility Belt. Bruce Wayne is forced into action, prompting a partnership with a charismatic scientist to help solve the health crisis. But as he works in both the shadows and the light, Bruce finds himself drawn deeper into Gotham City's turmoil than ever before, fueling his obsession to save the city--an obsession that has already driven a wedge between him and Vicki Vale. The loyal Alfred, who had hoped Bruce's efforts as Batman could help him find closure, finds the opposite happening. Nightmares begin to prompt Bruce to ask new questions about the climactic events in the cathedral, and investigations by Commissioner Gordon and reporter Alexander Knox into the arsons only amplify his concerns.

Having told the people of Gotham City that they'd earned a rest from crime, Batman finds the forces of evil growing ever more organized--and orchestrated--by a sinister hand behind the scenes. The World's Greatest Detective must solve the greatest mystery of all: Could The Joker have somehow survived? And could he still have the last laugh against the people of Gotham City?

I read somewhere that Muse is going to appear in Daredevil: Born Again next year. Intrigued, I went and read Daredevil: Back in Black, vol. 3 - "Dark Art", which collects issues 10-14 of Daredevil (Vol. 5) from 2016. Muse is quite the grim character, and I wonder if the Disney+ reboot of the Netflix series is serious about being for adults. I hope so. Muse is the type of villain who would've fit into the 1980s run of Moon Knight comics. When the Netflix shows were still going strong, that '80s iteration of Moon Knight - no super-powers, just a 'vigilante'-type hero - would have been a natural fit. For those who may not remember, when Disney+ announced they were doing a Moon Knight series, I wondered whether they would touch any of those classic Moon Knight villains with a 10-foot pole. Black Specter, Morpheus, Stained Glass Scarlet, Druid Walsh, Werewolf by Night, and especially Bushman were exceptionally violent, even scary. None of them were even mentioned in the Disney show. (But they did do Werewolf by Night as a standalone Halloween special.)

Muse, from the 2016 Daredevil comic, is a serial-killer who creates art installations using the corpses, blood and viscera of his victims. Shades of John Doe in Se7en. Are they really going to do this story in Born Again? If so, cool, but I remain skeptical that they'll really go for it. For that matter, I'm still curious how they're going to handle Frank Castle. As violent as Netflix's Daredevil already was, Frank took it to another level. Will The Punisher suddenly stop killing people?

The cover of Daredevil (vol. 5) #14 (2016) is not a spoiler, but it's gory.

That series in the comics also introduced another vigilante hero, Blindspot, who has a suit that lets him turn invisible, Predator-style. I haven't read anything about him being in the new Disney series, though.

I have a question for all you superhero fans. It's something that's been bothering me ever since I was a kid watching the old superman cartoons. You know the ones where he can clear tall buildings in a single leap and outrun a speeding bullet.

Basically, what would happen if such a character, maybe not quite superman but say a powerful guy with similar powers were to decide to be neither a villain nor a hero. Just live his life normally but still use his powers to get ahead. There are plenty of ways this could give him a stupid advantage in life.

Like, can you imagine someone with super strength going into boxing? Or someone with super speed deciding he just wants to join a football team and run circles around the opposing players? Or someone with laser eyes deciding to go into welding, machining or hell the military?

But insisting he stay well out of world politics or the newer ending fight between good and evil but absolutely not hiding or subduing his powers.

Does any of the comics ever address the implications of such a character just wanting to live "normally" in this way. Well, aside from the X men that is. I imagine they do.

Or looked around at our own world for inspiration? He couldn't possibly play sports in any sort of competitive fashion.

Have you read the very first Spider-man story…?
I've only ever seen the movies. But in general that's what I was thinking of but go full pro. Like, not juts one fight and forget about it but go all in.
Or looked around at our own world for inspiration? He couldn't possibly play sports in any sort of competitive fashion.
Why not? I mean, I do not know of any rule in modern sport that would ban someone incredibly gifted like that from participating. Mostly because the real world does not have such people to begin with.
But assuming it is just a normal human + powers and not say an alien what could they possibly do that would not run a foul of discrimination laws?
