SuperNES I: Gods Among Us

Intro:

Welcome to SuperNES I: Gods Among Us. This is the first in four planned NESes, based around players creating either a super hero or super villain and writing stories about their characters. The series will span the 20th century and involve key events over this one-hundred year period. This NES will start in 1900 and span (hopefully) twenty-thirty years. Up until now, the world has not seen a super-powered individual. However, in the year 1900, we finally see the first true super beings. No one knows what caused them to appear or realize their latent powers, but they are here, and they have the power to influence the world around them like almost no one else before. This NES will begin the point of departure from our timeline to this game’s timeline. With super humans suddenly appearing, history will surely take some strange and different turns.

Game Play:

Game play for this NES is simple. Write stories. Collaborate with other players, and keep the plot moving. From time to time I, the mod, will throw in events in the form of updates to challenge the characters to face and overcome them. Stats will not play a huge role in the NES as of now, but may in the future (as the rules will be a WIP). I hope the players will be mature enough to not “God Mode” the stories and keep things as realistic as the super powers will allow.

Your Character:

To create your character, use this template:

Character Name
/Player Name
Nationality:
Location:
Power:
Weakness:

Ex:

The Lone Rider/bestshot9
Nationality: American
Location: Houston
Power: Gun Magic
Weakness: Regular Human

This is fairly simple. The template should be fairly self-explanatory, and none of it is optional. All characters must have one power and at least one weakness. This can be anything that the player can think of, but if I deem the weakness to not be enough of a weakness, I can block the character from coming into the world until the player fixes it.

As for location, you must choose from this list:

US:
-Washington, D.C.
-New York City
-Houston
-Chicago
-San Francisco

Europe:
-London
-Paris
-Berlin
-Rome
-Moscow

I am limiting the starting locations to these cities to encourage player interaction and story collaboration. These will be regional “hubs”, just because you’re located in Houston, for example, doesn’t mean your character can’t travel to other areas in the same region, or move regions all together. It is mainly, as I said, to encourage player interaction from early in the game.

You may notice that there is no background section for your character. Since this is the first NES in the series players should make their first story their origin story/background story.

Issues:

For this NES, I will be calling updates “issues” to keep in the comic/super hero feel. As such, each issue may span a day, or a month, or how ever long I deem necessary to keep the plot moving. I will try to make it a realistic span of time based off of the player’s stories, but I will try to keep it moving along so players can interact with world events as they pop up.

Player List:

The Blessed Aegis, of the Order of the Knights of Christ, Brother Mateo of Notre Dame/Anonymoose
Nationality: American
Location:paris, the city of love...
Power: Mateo was a travelling friar from Chicago, Illinois. He was performing services for the Archdiocese of Paris in the Cathedral of Notre Dame when he, and the rest of the cathedral, was smitten by a great cataclysm from the sky. The cataclysmic event imbued Mateo with power over the grounds of the cathedral and granted him great motivation to protect the sacred grounds.
Weakness: Mateo's power wanes as he strays from holy ground, so much so that being away for too long visibly ages him and could lead to his demise.

Stranger/Seon
Nationality: Shrug. Sounds American though.
Location: Everywhere and nowhere the same time.
Power: Existence. He appears seemingly out of the shadows, the mist, out of the corner of one's eyes. There is no place on earth where he did not walk across before. His power and will to exist is such that, if destroyed, he will eventually appear once more.
Weakness: He may not materialize or dematerialize in line of sight of any living being capable of remembering him. He is a regular human in intelligence, strength, and dexterity otherwise.

Thomas "Inverse" Newton/Luckymoose
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Gyromancy, the ability to manipulate gravity, but not control it. He can modify the weight of objects around him, throw or pull objects towards him or away from him, etc.
Weakness: Beyond his powers he is merely human.

The Shadow/Nailix
Nationality: American
Location: Rome
Power: Able to teleport to distances within sight.
Weakness: Cannot use his powers while being electrified.

Babyface/Terrance888
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Naturally Repellant to All Powers and Things
Weakness: Naturally Repellant to All Powers and Things

Jack Diamond/Lord_Iggy
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Superhuman Dexterity
Weakness: Power only activates when focused through playing cards

Professor Hügel/J.K. Stockholme
Nationality: German (or French, British or American if he can convince you)
Current Location: Berlin
Power: Superhuman persuasion and diplomacy; has a powerful, fixating voice which can convince weak willed or unsuspecting people. Especially good with crowds, as he can manipulate them to do or believe odd or even crazy things are reasonable, particularly song and dance routines.
Weakness: Is constantly fleeing authority, and cannot convince people who've discovered his power. Otherwise regular guy.

Long Shan/Grandkhan
Nationality: Chinese
Current Location: New York City
Power: Far greater than average Strength, agility, speed, inhuman martial arts abilities.
Weakness: Is a regular human otherwise - has human levels of endurance and pain tolerance.

Baron Von Tragenort
/Thomas.berubeg
Nationality: German
Location: New York City
Power: A Whole Bevy of supernatural powers, including the ability to channel power, Summon creatures from the ether, and transform himself into a Bear. (Magic)
Weakness: Is a Normal human, and so can easily be injured like any other. Additionally, Silver has a detrimental effect on his enchantments, effectively crippling their "Shelf Life," While certain Iron Talismans are a struggle to bypass.

Jake Connolly/Arrow Gamer
Nationality: American
Location: NYC
Powers: Super strength, reactive evolution and superspeed.
Weakness: If he is not in contact with the ground, directly or indirectly (like if he's in a building) he loses all his powers except super strength.

Sam/qoou
Nationality: Russian-Irish
Location: New York City
Power: Ability to regulate and interfere with the hormonal systems of living beings.
Weakness: Emotional immaturity stemming from horrid childhood, lack of knowledge of biology, superstition, unawareness of extent of powers, inability to fully control powers, inability to keep powers fully in check; a tendency to, without knowing, use powers on self when in a state of anger/fear/joy/etc, exacerbating said state.

Sir Nigel Gibson/merciary
Nationality: British
Location: London
Power: possesses anyone who wears him with complete access to their memories and skills, if some dies while wearing him he gains their memories permanently
Weakness: he's a ring

Electric/erez87
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Control over and the ability to produce electricity. Can create large amounts of electric energy in his body and channel them outwards into any target. Also capable of creating a sort of electric shield that electrifies anything nearby, causing things to slow down, explode etc... While he can create a lot of power, lightning is still stronger - but he is capable of channeling lighting into any target when concentrating.
Weakness: Water, even the smallest amount on his skin can be very painful as he gets electrified by his own body, sweating can be a problem. He is also a regular human being, thought his shield protects him from most things. Another weakness is his mind – he is insane and can easily lose control and concentration when annoyed.

The Lone Rider
/bestshot9
Nationality: American
Location: Houston
Power: Gun Magic
Weakness: Regular Human

Lloyd Everett Lane “The Coalman”/Tuxedohamm
Nationality: American
Location: Washington, DC
Power: Enchanted Pick and Shovel. Increased strength, agility, speed, and endurance. Other minor benefits originated from pick and shovel.
Weakness: Completely human without pick and shovel and only half powered with only pick OR shovel.

Jack "Fighin' Irish" O"Flannery
/TheLastJacobite
Nationality: Irish
Location: New York
Power: He is the luckiest man alive
Weakness: Everyone's luck runs out...

Name: Anne Smith
/NinjaCow64
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Ability to see visions of a person's future of someone she touches, from their perspective. These visions last approximately half a minute each, although only moments passes for everyone else. The future can be changed, although she needs to be directly intervening.
Weakness: A vast majority of her visions are utterly useless, showing people walking along the street or doing something equally as mundane. Also, she has no idea when these visions are going to happen, they can range from being seconds in the future to decades in the future. Also, having a vision every time you touch someone is very disorientating.

Name: Sebastian von Krauf/<nuke>
Nationality: German
Location: San Francisco
Power: Able to manipulate blood. Right now, he is only able to use it like a whip, though with experimentation, he may find his power is deeper than he thought
Weakness: Only recently did he find his power, so he still needs to find out the depths of his power. Though he is physically stronger than the average human, he's not extraordinary by any means in the physical department. As he uses his power more and more, physically he becomes weaker, and as he loses blood, Sebastian has less he can fight with, and too much blood usage in a short span will weak him.

Character Name/Player Name: Jonah Archard
/bombshoo
Nationality: Born English/American
Location: New York City
Power: His extreme age (344) gives him a great deal of knowledge of the world. Also, since he is basically undead, he cannot feel pain and he cannot "die" by most conventional means (though since he is entirely physical, he can still be burned to nothing but ash, ground into a dust, dissolved in acid, etc).
Weakness: He smells like death and decay and his "true form" is quite rotten and disgusting, requiring him to use huge amounts of cologne and makeup to maintain the appearance of a normal human being.

Edit: bestshot, you have to keep me honest on this one. Can't let me slack too much. Work and school be damned!

Character Name: Stranger

Location: Everywhere and nowhere the same time.
Power: Existence. He appears seemingly out of the shadows, the mist, out of the corner of one's eyes. There is no place on earth where he did not walk across before. His power and will to exist is such that, if destroyed, he will eventually appear once more.

Character Name: Thomas "Inverse" Newton
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Gyromancy, the ability to manipulate gravity, but not control it. He can modify the weight of objects around him, throw or pull objects towards him or away from him, etc.
Weakness: Beyond his powers he is merely human.

Background: Thomas was born to a small, working-class family in New York City during the height of immigration in the late-1870s. He watched as his family lost their little livelihood to the Irish and Poles and Italians, who would work for far cheaper than any self-respecting American. This forced him onto the streets and into the factories at an early age in order to do what work he could to help his family. This history has given him a xenophobic worldview. He likens himself to the Founding Fathers. And then, the Awakening unleashed a power within him that he cannot begin to fathom. The only thing he knows is that his power has given him a new lease on life. Thomas has taken the surname Newton and an identity known as Inverse, and seeks others that have been Awakened to join him in his crusade for a new, better world.

Character: The Shadow/Nailix
Nationality: American
Location: Rome
Power: Able to teleport to distances within sight.
Weakness: Cannot use his powers while being electrified.

The Shadow

James Wade was a normal teenager living in Boston, Massachusetts. He was eighteen and had just started working for a company located near the docks that dealt with loading and unloading boats. One day, near the end of his shift, a boat got in late and wasn't replying over the radio. James was unaware of the radio transmissions and was getting in position to prepare to unload the cargo when his foreman yelled at him to get back, unable to hear the man he turned and yelled back. Just as the foreman started signaling him back frantically he heard the ships horn. James turned to face the ship once more and realized the ship wasn't slowing down, he immediately started running away but was unable to outrun it. The ship collided with the dock hard sending wood planks soaring through the air, one plank was driven into the back of James' skull and knocked him unconscious.

When James awoke he was in a hospital bed with his head wrapped and his arm in a sling. It hurt for him to breathe and when the nurse came into the room she looked stunned to see him awake. She explained to him that he had almost died, his skull had been fractured, his arm broken and four of his ribs were cracked. He felt lucky to be alive, but knew he couldn't afford the hospital bill and with no family to help him out he had to leave as soon as he could.

His best friend, Chris Moore, picked him up from the hospital and James told him what he was planning. Chris tried to talk him out of running away, but knew there was no way for James to pay and would end up homeless anyways. While James was home resting a man came knocking on his door, the man was large and looked angry. The man turned out to be a bill collector for the hospital and began threatening James when he said he couldn't pay yet. Finally the man came after James and, just as he was about to grab him, James teleported across the room. James was able to knock the man out and began running. He got into his car and drove toward the docks, not sure what happened, he knew he had to leave on the next boat that came in. When he arrived a boat was just about to dock and James' foreman approached him telling James he wasn't supposed to be working for another week, James ignored him and headed towards the boat. He heard a vehicle screech in behind him and a door slam shut, then a man yelled his name out and James began running. Focusing on the boat with all his concentration he felt himself kind of float through the air at an amazingly fast pace and land hard on the boat. Realizing he had just teleported once more, he looked over the side of the boat to see the man running toward the side of the container James was on before he teleported.

James was safe, nobody had realized what had happened and he stowed away in an empty room on the boat until it arrived at it's next destination. Rome.

Bernard "Babyface" Whitmore/Terrance888
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Naturally Repellant to All Powers and Things
Weakness: Naturally Repellant to All Powers and Things

An explanation, anything and everything naturally is repelled by him. Women, men, clothes, powers... everything. Although it isn't much passively, Babyface finds himself friendless, easy tasks like eating or drinking or putting on clothes taking additional efforts, and that crowds part naturally in his wake. When focused, however, he can dodge bullets, diminish or cancel out others powers or even "bounce" off of surfaces. Inversely, others can focus their willpower to get past his repellant nature.

Another way at looking at it is that he has a natural forcefield that slightly repels everything from him. He can focus this force field on specific areas or items, and this force field can be broken or intruded.

Backstory Stuff
He is called Babyface because he has no hair on his body whatsoever. Although his powers were innate since his birth, he only discovered he can focus them around when he entered puberty. At the time, a certain hair vexed him. A long, wormy, greasy hemp-like growth on his masculine instrument. When he cut it out it regrew quickly, within the week. He decided to focus on getting the growth off his body and repelled the hair from him.

What happened instead is that ALL the hair on his body was ripped off his body. Needless to say it was really painful, and somewhat bloody, and oh yeah, very much permanent. These days, he wears plenty of false hairdos and mustaches as part of his secret identity, the small time investor and assistant Bernard Whitmore. When it's time to play, however, a simple though will cause his false hair to pop off, and Babyface is ready for action.

At least he's immune to goose bumps.

Jack Diamond/Lord_Iggy
Nationality: American
Location: New York City
Power: Superhuman Dexterity
Weakness: Power only activates when focused through playing cards

You beat me to the punch, bestshot. :p

Kaiser and I were literally going to post a superhero NES later this evening. Would anyone be interested in two of them?

Character: Professor Hügel/J.K.

Background of "Professor" Harald Hügel
January Jail

Is it alright if I lift a previous character from a NES? I still really want to write some kind of evil kung-fu monk dude again, since InhumanNES didn't work out.

Especially since he'd work a hell of a lot better in this than InhumanNES :p

I'm reserving a spot now, I'll have a character up some time soon.

Long Shan/Grandkhan
Nationality: Chinese
Current Location: New York City
Power: Far greater than average Strength, agility, speed, inhuman martial arts abilities.
Weakness: Is a regular human otherwise - has human levels of endurance and pain tolerance.

Background:
Spoiler :

Long Shan was born in the year 1878 to a family of Chinese peasants in a small village in rural Shaanxi. His family was abducted and carried off by a group of Shang Liang Tianquo cultists, who were trying to gather human sacrifices for the summoning of the Great Dragon of the Endtimes.

Their attempt, whether it would be successful or not and deeply questioning the existence of the Great Dragon in the first place, was foiled by the monks of the Drepang Tuong monastery, but they were unable to save Long's family, for which he was resentful. Nevertheless, he allowed himself to be adopted by the Drepang Tuong and taught their unique Drepang Lu Kung-fu style in order to become powerful enough to destroy the Shang Liang. The desire for revenge fuelled him to become the most powerful student in the monastery, but still he desired more power.

However, on his 18th birthday, his master refused to teach him any further, saying that he would be unable to learn anything more until he had calmed the anger in his heart and attained serenity. The way to martial arts ability, he said, was through serenity and understanding, not rage and the lust for power. Furious at the refusal, Long challenged his master to a duel and killed him in his rage. He then followed by slaughtering everyone in the monastery, making him the last practitioner of the Drepang Lu in the world. Still his rage was strong, and, feeling himself the most powerful man alive, he journeyed to the Temple of the Shang Liang Tianquo temple in rural China to destroy them. He barely escaped from the battle alive, being thoroughly defeated by the cultists and being forced to flee.

Furious at his failure, Long vowed to destroy the cult eventually and to gain more power until he could. It was at this point that his latent powers began to manifest themselves. Long Shan has travelled the Earth, seeking power and strength to become the greatest martial artist alive. Now he finds himself in New York...

Is the background okay? I wasn't 100% sure whether it was "Powers only begin to manifest in 1900" or "1900 is when people start to find out about superpowers."

Baron Von Tragenort/Thomas.berubeg
Nationality: German
Location: New York City
Power: A Whole Bevy of supernatural powers, including the ability to channel power, Summon creatures from the ether, and transform himself into a Bear. (Magic)
Weakness: Is a Normal human, and so can easily be injured like any other. Additionally, Silver has a detrimental effect on his enchantments, effectively crippling their "Shelf Life," While certain Iron Talismans are a struggle to bypass.

Background: The Baron has never revealed his origin, despite boasting a thick German Accent. There certainly is no Tragenort on any map, much less any nobility associated with it, but The Baron does carry himself with a regal bearing. As mysterious is the source of his power: None who have tried to repeat his rituals have done so with any success, though the luckiest are the ones who achieved no results. This, to some, suggests that the Baron may have entered into an agreement with some distant entity to protect him in his endeavors, though this is obviously impossible to confirm.
All that is known is that the Baron stepped off a ship on January 1st, 1900, and set to work building a Criminal Empire.

Pfff, is being human otherwise SUCH a weakness? Are we to assume that if you don't put that you aren't a "normal" human otherwise? I didn't put "Is a Normal Human" as my weakness. Am I tougher than you? Faster? Stronger? Less Sleep?

I can see where this can be a weakness in, say, the case of super strength. You can punch real hard but if you get hit back you can't take the blow, and you aren't that fast in blocking/dodging- just at strength. Or super speed: you are fast, but you only have normal endurance for your super speed. (AKA I'm good with Long Shan and some others). You can manipulate electricity but you have no extra resistance to being shocked.
