Swearing. Whats the problem?

I'd better not link to the Tourette's Karaoke then ;) Hey there Delilah is the best song he does, although Hello is good as well.

at least they're not a bunch of backstabbing dime-a-dozen scumbags

but they just wear highly flammable suits and act snooty. (except the dead ringers, gotta say they can get annoying). Scouts'll steal your sandwich.

Why is swearing considered bad manners? I have never understood the concept of "bad words". Surely it is the intention and not the word itself that should inflict offense on people?

How do you feel about swearing and the concept of "bad language"? Do you think less of frequent swearers? Explain yourself!
People swear because it is bad manors; there is nothing that makes saying "****" any different from saying "crap" or "ouch" besides the fact that people think it's a more harsh and worse term. So by choosing to swear you are picking out what you think are the most obscene word and saying them on purpose.

I think that a frequent swearer does betray something about themselves by swearing a lot, but it's not so simple as swearing=bad. I do swear sometimes.

Has the autocensor gone on a break ;)

You didn't even have to use sneaky methods to disguise your f-bomb

I'm perfectly capable of not swearing when need be...but if I'm hanging around family or friends I'm a @#$%ing potty mouth. :D

As a kid I was very sheltered from profanity, so it really offended me when I heard it. Now I'm in high school and I swear more than most of my friends. I make an effort not to swear around people who could be offended, but I don't think there's anything wrong with profanity in an appropriate context.

Just a little tidbit for you personally:)

I think swearing is kinda the OPPOSITE of these things, its vulgur and crude, and certain swears are considered very offensive in our culture. So while I'm not OFFENDED by it per say, I don't like it, and I never use profanity myself.

I think Bill and Ted said it better: "Be excellent to each other. And party on, dudes".

I think swearing is proof there is a God.

Swearing is great in the right time and place. I'm not terribly bothered, but you should still watch where you are. Think of the children! Also, be creative when you swear.

It really depends on the context. If it's not overused, it does allow us to put more emphasis on certain thoughts, whether those thoughts are positive or not. When it's used excessively, it's just kind of funny, like the F'ing Weather.

I'm pretty sure that's how Eugene Peterson translated it.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with any words in themselves. The meaning is far more in the conveyance. But given that swear words are so clearly associated with negative meanings, including them in your speech will generally have the effect of being offensive or abrasive.

I don't like swearing as filler words in particular. Because then the word itself carries no meaning, and is just said in order to either shock or offend. It's not so much a matter of it being 'unnecessary' as being 'rude'.

Swearing is really no big deal. I find it stupid if people swear intentionally though. I swear all the time, it just flows out, but I watch it at home. Some of you probably know why.

English swears sound much softer to me then their Russian equivalents for some reason.

As long as profanity isn't overused (and thus lose its meaning) or used when it really isn't called for, I don't care.

Swearing is OK among certain groups (EG: your mates). Although, a man must regulate himself to suit the situation.

You are not going to curse like a Centurion in front of a man interviewing you for a vital job...Unless you are insane.

On a side note, no-one in my family swears. I have never heard my father curse, for instance. I also keep to this rule around family.

I guess what I'm getting at is, why should that be the case?

It is, and I act accordingly, but I just find it interesting.

Well, if you overuse profanity, they lose their main utility, which is to communicate anger and frustration better than non-profane words. In addition, taboo words have a anxious effect on those who are offended by it. Part of why it may be inappropriate is because they associate people with the anger associated in the words, and it is socially inappropriate to appear angry when situations don't merit it. It's not a matter of logic; the words themselves have a more pragmatic effect than their mere semantic meaning, as they are tied to the emotions associated with them.

Yes, I agree, any word used incorrectly or too often loses its value. Like the word ''hate'', too many people say they hate things and it has somewhat lost its value. But yet hate is not a taboo word.

I don't swear around my friends because it is bad manners. Its because I tend to have more passionate discussion with my friends, and that can warrant swearing. I don't do it for some sort of thrill of doing something I shouldn't.

Every Russian word is automatically more harsh sounding that an English word. Its in the breeding. Ye're tougher, so the language is too.

I don't swear at all. I said a swear word once when I was about six when I got stuck on a game and I was punished for it. I never said any swear words since then, even words that are considered mild.

Oh, bollocks you don't.

My mother doesn't swear and uses cute old-fashioned replacement words like "shirty". Sometimes she will say "buggered" as a joke. I don't swear around her.

yeah, I don't remember my parents swearing, so I didn't swear much at all when I was a kid

and then I went into the army

You think you had it bad? Where I grew up, calling someone a shunt was a term of affection, and then I joined up and rose through the ranks, of course by the end of that every other word was blue... to be given the Queen's Commission and informed that a good officer swears only just enough to prove that he can. God but that made the next few years fun!
