Swiss Mercenary and upgrades

Just finished my 1st epic game yesterday, playing as Dutch. I noticed that my Swiss Mercenaries could not upgrade to musketmen. Looking in the biq file, I found that they upgrade to muskeTEERS(!) and that musketmen upgrade to Swiss Mercenaries! I checked the file in case I accidentally modified it, but it was stamped the same as other C3C files, end of September. What gives?

That is absolutely correct and not a bug. You really don't want to build musketmen if you can build Swiss Mercs. They are one of the best deals in the game at only 30 shields. The one extra attack on musketmen is not worth 30 more shields so it isn't allowed except under unusual circumstances (you have gunpowder but no iron in a city).

BTW, they can't actually upgrade to musketeers as only the French can build them. This is just how UUs are put into the upgrade chains. The real upgrade for Swiss Mercs is riflemen.

Since Swiss Mercs. have the same defence as Musketmen and come at only half the price they have been placed after Musketmen in the upgrade chain. In case you run out of Iron but have Saltpeter you will still be able to build Musketmen.

Swiss Mercs. upgrading to Musketeers is just the way the upgrade path works - so that all units can be upgraded from lower and to higher units - and has no influence for the Dutch, as only the French can build Musketeers anyway. The same goes for all other UUs in other upgrade chains.

I'm cool with the Swiss merc. knowing its the cheapest and best defence unit in that era..and cheap!..did i mention cheap?

Also i would like a naval unit better..preferably one with amphibious assault. Seeing as that was used during the spanisch ocupation alot to take back cities

Yes, Dutch UU, if it's naval, could be... The Flying Dutchman !
An unit invisible with stealth attack

Now u're talking..and it spawns ICBM's and fires laser  :scan:

i'm personally pleased with the Dutch civ (maybe a slightly diff leader head) but the UU and traits are cool and make a cool civ to play with

i was afraid they would make it a halve doped Civ with traits as religious (wich could be possible) and expansionist..that would blow. And a UU like a naval scout...with 1.1.4 or sumthing.

Things worked out nicely, one of the few things they actualy did good :goodjob:

I see your point about the Swiss Mercenary, warpstorm. They are excellent defenders, as I discovered to my chagrin when I played the 3rd intro Conquest as the Germans. I never upgraded until infantry in the epic game. But, it would still be nice to have the option to upgrade to the musketman, in case the AI started to send a bunch of warriors against a border city, and you had a chance to go for elite units/leaders. You might want to counterattack with musketmen, if you have nothing else.

I'm - as a Swiss - am totally happy with the dutch UU :)
To the above, I've nothing to add. It is like said above, if you want it in a other way, feel free to mod (or let mod :))

The UU is A SWISS Merc, because that is what most countries hired in the middle ages. It makes sense, like all the other Merc units, they're based off what really happened.

Playing against the Dutch sucks, the Bactar Intro Conq. I was at war with the Dutch and Port, and too many of my knights and Med Inf kept getting killed to take out one Swiss Merc. and the AI would just move them into my territory knowing I wouldn't attack them right off the bat. Even my Cursaders where having a rough time with them.

Unfortunately, an upgrade chain is linear and shared by all teams. Either the mercs upgrade to musketmen or the musketmen upgrade to mercs.

I think they made the right choice.
