Has anyone noticed that swordsmen still remain on the produciton menu despite the fact that you can build modern armor and planes. Has anyone found a solution to this?

if you cut off your source of iron you dont need to worry about it b/c you cant build em without iron. But if you have automated settlers that may be a problem, they may build roads again if its in the city radius

swordsmen should be obsolete by riflemen, so open the editor and make them upgrade to: riflemen. but make sure you dont check the "upgrade" ability unless you want to actually be able to upgrade them. either way swordsmen will be gone from the queue when u get nationalism.

Of course, since its this simple, why didnt firaxis just open their great editor and do this for us?

i though musket men upgrade to riflemen, swordsmen were upgraded wariors and that was the end of the line i thought.

Its the same thing with longbowmen, but since they require no resource to build, they remain in the queue forever.

Yeah, but then if Swordsmen aren't available it goes to previous unit.....Warrior!, Yeah, I want to build warriors in the 21st century.

Building warriors in the 21st century... not so bad of an idea as it might sound.

If you are in a government that benefits from suppressing its citizenry, it is useful to have a portion of your military whose sole purpose is to knock your own people around. I build warriors in the modern times and I have been known to cut roads to one of my cities for the purpose of denying it resources so that I can build warriors.

No sense in building EXPENSIVE units to do all the sitting around that needs to be done.

yea .... i think it sux!! ... u should be able to make the unit obsolite manually and piss it off your list!! ... u could use em as cheep police units .... but i would rather have good units defending my citys ... and imaging .... what self respecting civilization is going to have swordsmen units in the 20th century!! ... lol .. imaging if u did that in multiplayer (when we get it) ... lol u would be laughed off the continent ... after the infantry tanks and cav got through u

Keep in mind that as long as you deny your citizens any access to weaponry your police don't need guns. British bobbies are considerably less armed than swordsmen and the UK is still "making" bobby units.

using warriors are happy police is a good idea. i have to try that since, in my current game, i'm using communism, so i can force happiness on 4 citizens per city.

just wondering though, do warrior require less upkeep cost per turn than say infantry? i'm guessing it does since it makes sense that an aircraft carrier would cost more to maintain than a regular footsoldier.

I think every unit takes 1 gold to maintain. (Beyond the 2, 4 or 8 that certain oppresive governments cover for you. None for Republic and Democracy of course.)

The reason to build warriors instead of infantry for example is that it takes 10 shields to build a warrior. If its never going to see combat, and if its just going to be used to supress discontent citizens, why waste 80 shields building an infantry unit?

You can clean up your modern day production queue by using the editor and making Swordsmen and Longbowmen upgradable to Infantry :)

The same applies to privateers (which, IMHO, arent worth producing but that's just me) and ironclads - who wants to build those when you have nuclear subs and battleships around? ;)

Actually, I saw a thread somewhere that suggested a good use for Privateers. I keep forgeting to try it out to see if it works.

It went something like this.

The AI seems to like going for Privateers without any provocation, which makes sense really.

But if you stack a couple of Frigates on the same tile, it's the Frigate that gets attacked. Thanks to the Privateer, there's no war decleration.

So if you want to cut down a friendly AI's navy mid game, without going to war, they provide a way.
