Here is the text of my questions and "answers" from take2 support. (In reverse order)
I see similar problems in this forum, but no help so far.
Hopefully, any response I get here will be more perceptive than take2.
Thanks, Mark

This is not "solved"
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 28/10/2007 03.12 AM
Yes, I bought both at WalMart

Hello,
Can I check, are both games (Civ IV and BTS) retail versions of the game?
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 27/10/2007 05.00 PM
That should be "CIV4_SDK.ZIP", sorry.
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 27/10/2007 04.57 PM
The files do copy over with no problems.
They are...
A folder named "Manual",
A folder named "SDK", containing CIV_SDK.zip, 6,197,991 bytes,
A file named "DATA4.CAB" 30,160,334 bytes.
Properties show that this file opens with windows explorer.
When I tried this I got an empty folder.
But this also happens when I try to open the other .CAB files.
What next?

Hello,
If the files from disk 3 copy to a folder on the hard-drive without any problems, this tells us that the issue isn't with the disk because if this was the case the files wouldn't be able to copy. Can you confirm that the files do copy over?
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 27/10/2007 01.27 AM
As I noted in my last update,
I have installed the game 5 times, so far, with the same result.
The files on disc 3 are not installed because of the "Insert disc 3" dialog box not responding every time,
which I have also mentioned before.
How about sending me a new disc 3, since this is the only thing that goes wrong?
Disc 1 and disc 2 cause no problems.
I have tried copying the files on disc3 to a folder on my hard drive, and installing them from the folder,
but the dialog box changes the location back to D:\ every time.
Of course, I could just buy another copy of the game and hope that disc 3 will install this time, but I don't want to.
How about you send me another disc 3?
This problem is not solved.
It won't be solved until the files on disc 3 are installed.

Hello,
It's odd that the game is playing but not showing as installed. Please try re-running the setup files. Put the install disk into the drive, then, go to My Computer. Right click on the drive you have the disk in then go to Explore. From there, double-click the setup.exe file and let the install run again.

I am trying to install Beyond the Sword.
Civ 4 1.61, although it plays fine, is apparently not installed,
due to "insert disc 3" dialog box not responding (installed 5 times so far with same result),
therefore cannot be uninstalled or patched.
Beyond the Sword cannot be installed without Civ 4 1.61 being patched to 1.74. (Patch can't detect Civ 4)
Please rule out any solution already noted on this site or civfanatics.

Hello,
Can I just clarify, are you try to uninstall Civ IV and Beyond The Sword or just one or the other?
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 13/10/2007 06.33 PM
Civ 4 is NOT on the list of programs in "Add Remove Programs", so I CANNOT uninstall it. (As I stated before!)
I have already tried the trick with the installshield folder,
it does nothing.
I also tried to send an error report to
http://www.installshield.com/isetup/ProErrorCentral.asp?ErrorCode=%d : 0x%x&ErrorInfo=%s
an address I got from the .ini file in this folder.
I got to a page that thanked me for the report and asked me for my email address, but did not let me actually make any report.
Maybe there is something physically wrong with disc 3 that causes the "insert disc 3" dialog box to stop responding?
Maybe there is data on disc 3 that tells my computer that the game is installed?
Maybe you could just send me another disc 3?
Maybe the problem cannot be resolved until this happens?

Open My Computer then open the Local Disk (C
Open the program files folder.
Click on the tools menu then choose folder options
Click on the view tab and tick the box labelled "show hidden files and folders". Press OK
Open the installshield installation information folder
Search for a folder named {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3BF-D6E01F4112E8}
Right click on the folder and choose rename. Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD. Press the enter key
Insert the Civilization IV install CD and open My Computer. Right click on the CD drive and choose explore,
Locate the setup.exe file and double click.
This will replace and overwrite any missing components that were preventing the game from being uninstalled normally
To uninstall the game, go to Control Panel>> Add/Remove programs and highlight the game in the list. Choose change/remove and follow the onscreen prompts

I CANNOT install any patch or uninstall Civ 4 because I always get a message that Civ 4 is not installed.
What else can I do to install Beyong the Sword?
I assume this is related to the "insert disc 3" dialog box not responding during the original Civ 4 install.
Response (Christopher Stephenson) 01/10/2007 07.20 PM
Hello,
Please go to this website and update to the latest patch:
http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=6&patch=1
If this does not work, uninstall the game and reinstall then apply patch 1.61 then 1.74 after.
Then install Beyond the Sword.
Customer (Mark Weisbach) 22/09/2007 04.26 PM
Installation aborts when trying to update civ 4 to 1.74
Manual installation of 1.74 fails because "civ 4 is not installed on this computer".
Add remove programs shows no civ 4.
Setup shows no uninstall option.
Civ 4 plays just fine, no errors, everything works.
How do I intall Beyond the Sword?
