Let me start by saying that I love the new sketched overlay that replaces the fog of war on the map. I would love to see this feature carry over into later versions and integrated more fully into the game.

A couple thoughts I have had on how this could be achieved:

1. Require unlocking of the ability to generate sketched map through research of technology (such as Writing>Cartography).

This would better simulate the difficulties faced by ancient civilizations and could be implemented a couple of different ways:
First, until you research the required technology, the blank map appearance would return after it is no longer in your range of vision.
Another option would be to have the ability to generate a rudimentary sketch of the map from the start that includes city locations and large terrain features such as mountains and coast. After certain technologies are researched you could increase the detail the map shows (lesser terrain features, resources, city districts, ect.) as well as improve the visual style of the overlay.

2. Change the visual style of the sketched map overlay as you transition between different eras in the game (similar to how city buildings change).

In the ancient era the map could appear with just a few rough lines (like a cave sketch). This would be improved slightly as you pass into the classical era. The map overlay used in Civ 6 would likely apply to either the medieval era or the renaissance era. The modern era could use a map overlay similar to today's regional maps or even Google Maps.

I think these changes would be easy to implement and would do a great job of tying the beautiful map feature into the rest of the game.

That would be great. Upon researching Satellites, the fog of war would simply be like Google Maps, except that it would be desaturated.

Industrial-era, modern-era, and atomic-era maps can look like maps found in those old atlases found in one's high school.
