Tales from the Ether (pre-NES)

I got mah story up, more to come soon, I was gonna post my invention up here but i decided to put up a story that'll describe it. hope thats ok :)

just a question we were talkin about radio's just wondering does ship to ship communication exist? short or long range didnt c anything about it

I think heliographs or signal lanmps. Semaphore a short range. That how ships at the mostly communicated.

Or, of course, you could stringout a wire, but that's impractical.

Darksaber1 is correct. Heliograph/signal lamps can be done ship-to-ship!

I'm afraid I have to leave this NES for the moment. I might join once it's run for a turn or two. Sorry.

A few quick notes:

It is the Coprates, not the Corporates. It is Copratia, not Corpratia. etc.

Also, there probably are maps dedicated to resources (actually there are, but I don't want to use them because I like leaving that open). But not all resources have been mapped. Just those around major city-states and colonies.

The stories are very fun to read thus far. nicely done crew.

Good luck to those finishing up exams.

Sooory about the spelling :(

Aww man, I wanted to make a meaningful cartographic contribution :p

No worries. And you can still do that. Like I said, only resources around major settled regions have been mapped. It's always possible a new gumme resource can be found in the steppes. But it might be known by some High Martians, so be careful. :D

Just out of curiosity how well can the high martians fly?

In addition i know they are supposed to be rather hostile but how reasonable are they is it like a shoot on sight situation or would they be willing to see what someone who approached them had to offer or what they were up to? like how agressive are they?

It honestly depends on the kraag, and not every kraag has been explored or negotiated with. Some will just kill on sight and not talk - but these High Martians tend to be non-sedentary barbarians, and not kraag-dwelling clans. More and more kraags and their clans are wanting wares from Earth - strange European trinkets, perhaps tobacco and liquor even. So they might see what you have to say, but they are extremely aggressive and if what you have to offer doesn't interest them - have an escape plan or fear for your life. The more organized kraags might hear out more sophisticated propositions as well (i.e. war alliances, peace treaties, or deals regarding something you can do for them in exchange for something they can do to you). Even though they are aggressive and "uncivilized" compared to other Martians, they are likely to keep their word (again, that largely depends on which kraag you are dealing with... the more noble, proud clans are likely to keep their word, but don't rely on the barbarians roaming the steppes). Look for more established clans and their kraags - stay away from the always-moving barbarians in the steppes. That's the best advice I can give you. Even established kraags, though, can be extremely dangerous if you aren't careful.

Their flying ability is slightly better than the other animals on Mars: not amazing, but enough to get over a canyon or something. High Martians can't fly up in the sky up to aerial flyers or anything, but they can fly around their kraags like bats (they have those wing-like membranes under their arms), and if a flyer gets low enough - danger, danger.

I'm going to be a bit busy this weekend, but will still get update in on Sunday. If not, then on Monday.

In any case, many people haven't submitted invention proposals. By no means do you need to do that, but if you want to, you should do that by Sunday. :)

Cool. BTW I've got a week off school, and no more physics coursework, so I should be a lot more active now.

Physics coursework sounds like the most terrifying thing i can imagine. i mean had to force myself to do the basic math required to make a ship and figure out the supplies thing.

I'm back from my weekend out, and I'm happy to have read those great story posts upon my arrival home.

I'll start work on the update tonight and post it by tomorrow. The next season will last a bit longer.

@thomas: Sorry to see you go, but I think you are overestimating what is required of this NES. Everyone can write stories at their own pace. It isn't a race or competition or anything. I just don't want it to be a "never-ending story" without stories. Write at your own pace, though. Lots of freedom. Hope you'll reconsider one day.
