Ever since reading Tanizaki's story about the girl with the spider tatoo (japanese short tale), i was interested, even if mildly, in this art.

Recently the small circle of multinational authors i am part of shared a series of photos of morbid tatoos. Here is one of them:

Although i could not see myself getting such a thing, i would suspect that when the person is old, and in some old people's home, the nurse may be quite frightened from what she will discover in his back :D

What is your view of tatoos? Do you have any? Would you like to have, in case you do not? Do you regard them as potentially high art?

You can post your own favourites as well, just as long as there is some discussion and not merely image posting ;)

Hate tattoos that have no meaning besides "it looks cool".

I plan on getting a single tattoo on my wrist with my best friend sometime in the future that symbolizes how connected we are.

Besides that, I see no reason for another.

Uh...that one in the OP is...just...bad...taste-wise.

I have a tattoo: A totally manly thing...a dolphin :D, on my left shoulder.

I also plan to do the ultimateve nerd thing: Get the tattoo from Plansecape: Torment on my shoulder
(example). Not sure how that will go together with the dolphin .

Not sure what to do about my right arm...maybe a chinese dragon, winding around it. But the sissy version, without anything on the inside of the arm :mischief:. Must be terrible there.

Would like to plan more, but else...there's no real space. The skin on my back is horrible, my legs are too hairy, and not sure if I'd want a tattoo on the top of my feet...would probably also not the most pleasant space for one. Edit: And no, the rest is not a possibility :mischief:.

edit: I don't see a reason to give them a meaning (like above me). Your earrings or piercings also don't have a meaning, so I'd just go with motives, which look cool.

I hate piercings too.

Tattoos are a useful form of advertising, especially by girls, so that prospective bachelors can know what they're getting, if you know what I mean.

That you couldn't think of a joke that wasn't beaten to death years ago?

Don't like tattoos. Never have.

As I've said in the hundred thousand other threads on tattoos :p , I like tattoos and am predisposed to positively judge tattoos. I've never seen a tattoo that I really, really hate. In any case, I try not to judge people on their appearance such as their sense of fashion or style, and I certainly don't think worse of people because they choose to decorate themselves differently from me.

I'm quite opposite. I hate tattoos that symbolizes some feeling or whatever. I've seen so many ugly tattoos that are supposed to mean something.

If anyone get a tattoo please please please get one that works aestheticly instead of some dumb name or photo or birthdate or whatever.

Well, my brother got a tattoo on his arm of a bison, because they're his favorite animal. I like his tattoo a lot, mostly because it's in black and white. If I got a tattoo I'd be somewhere in my lower torso so it doesn't distract in formal situations. I like most tattoos, too, but some are just so ugly!

example of an bad tattoo:

I think this actually looks a little cool, until you find out that they're all Julia Roberts.

I never said I only supported ugly tattoos.

I've always wanted to get tā moko done with uhi (stone chisels). But if I got it done, I'd have to get the full deal and that'd be quite extensive for me.

Blech tattoos.

It's hard for me not to think this. I live in a beach town, and for whatever reason a ton of the tourists have them. I have to say that most of the time I think they look stupid.

EDIT:
Not my thing. A lot of people my age around here have them (I'd say a good 80% do) but there's nothing I would like to stay on my body forever.

That's more what I meant. I haven't seen much that wouldn't be embarrassing later on.

I have what could be considered a fairly lame mythical style eagle on my arm but the artwork is quite intricate to the point that it is sometimes commented on .

But I got it when I was 17 and had just left school and in the middle of an epic year long road trip around Australia with 2 mates , so it does remind me of some awesome times . I can literally go a year without even noticing that it is there .

But the main thing is , unlike EVERYBODY else , I am adamant I got mine just before they became fashionable :mischief:
