I will never be as good as you at Civ 4, but I want to be!

I've been thinking about Nevordan's posts and my own game. I'm not that great and I've learned a ton from you folks (my warring has certainly gotten better but not enough to make it a game winner).

But the fact of the matter is that terrain, difficulty level, random opponents and other factors (the fun stuff that make every game different and engaging) limits the use of reading ALC games and such. You get a lot out of that, but applying it to your situation is difficult (heck even changing ONE thing from a previous save of your own game can alter your future game entirely much less level and other factors)

Back to my point, what I'm wondering is this: I know it's not as exciting as Sisiutil's ALC games on Monarch, but - would some of you be willing to dig out your warlords disks, step down from Prince/Monarch/Immortal/Deity and work with a Noble-newb on a game? I can't be the only one struggling with this.

I don't mean walk me through every turn but I know that seeing your insights on my map and opponents with my desired VC at points would help me relate to them a lot better and apply them to future games.

My goals (meaning my weaknesses I'm trying to overcome) would be:
Noble Level
Conquest win (Maybe Domination, these are the two that I've never been able to get, really, at Noble)

Leader - Who knows
Map - You tell me
Speed - Seems like warmonger requires Epic or Mara

I'm not really looking for the quick and dirty Roman Praet rush. In fact maybe the opposite, how (and who) do you do it when you're NOT Roman. I'm looking to expand and improve my game not just rely on a debatably OP UU.

Any takers, or is this not really a good thing to ask?

AnaNg,

I'd just roll up a map and make a start. :)

Here's some settings for you;
  • Objective: Domination
  • Leader: George Washington (Charismatic and Expansive, Navy SEAL, Mall, Fishing and Agriculture)
  • Map: Standard Continents
  • Speed: Normal
I think that these proposed settings are challenging enough and 'open' not to push you down too many pre-determined pathways - the traits are handy for a warmonger, and the late-game unique unit and unique building are unlikely to be game-breakers although have their strengths. You'll have to acquire Astronomy - so the game won't be all over in 'next to no time', and I wouldn't play at a speed that favours your approach if you want to win from a largely 'neutral' position.

Here's your set-by-set timeframe;
  • 4000 BC to 2400 BC
  • 2400 BC to 875BC
  • 875BC to 125 AD
  • 125 AD to 1000 AD
  • 1000 AD to 1400 AD
  • 1400 AD to 1650 AD
  • 1650 AD to 1820AD
  • 1820 AD to 1900 AD
... and don't start with a clearly advantageous map either! ;)

I'd recommend domination over conquest too. Conquest is alot harder to pull off and requires a great start. The only time I succeeded in a conquest win was in Warlord of the Month 9, that was Prince level with raging barbarians but it was an easy map, and I built the Great Wall so I didn't have to worry about barbarians. It was epic speed.

Domination wins are quite doable at Normal speed. My first ever warlords game was a win on Nobe with Kublai Khan, normal speed.

My leader choice would be Alexander, his philosophical trait is a big bonus and you will want to be able to get to grips with great people usage.

I also play on noble level, i usually win but its enough of a challenge that i'm not ready to increase the level.

Like the OP i have never won conquest or domination although thats mainly due to the fact that i have the game won and those two conditions would take longer than space or diplo so i take the easy route.

I like reading the threads like the ALC and would also benefit from the knowledge and experience of those more gifted than myself (of which the list is endless). So i vote the OP starts a thread like the ALC and see where it goes from there, i play vanilla but the principles are the same.

Heh, I tried. the start was... less than optimal and the continuation isn't going that great either. See my Nooble Challenge thread.
