I'm sure someone has brought this stuff up before, but thought I may ask specifically.

Which techs does the AI often miss that I can keep in mind for trading?

We should all know by now that Alphabet is one of them.
I've noticed many miss Iron Working at the start.
Liberalism takes some ages too but I never seem to get it first.
    They miss Medicine a lot.

Can someone fill in the blanks the ones they miss? This way maybe I can actually trade better than just using the techs I lightbulb ahead.

I've also noticed they overvalue optics and won't trade it cheaply.

    Discuss.

Aesthetics is one of the best trade baits on higher levels (IMM+) due to the fact that many AI just go straight for alphabet and you can use aesthetics to trade for both Alphabet and IW most of the time.

Like you said, Liberalism is a good trade tech. Philosophy if you get their first can also be a great tech, allowing you to trade for stuff like feudalism and engineering. Also, if you are the first to philosophy and really want to win the lib race, not trading it away will buy you some time as the AIs tend not to tech philosophy after the religion has been founded.

Post-lib, the techs are really iffy. You just have to see a tech which some AIs don't have and research it to trade for other things.

Also, does anyone always get to liberalism first? How do you do it?

Yes every game I get it first. The way I get it is conquer an AI completely with an Axe rush or a Chariot rush, then expand out to about 10-12 cities by 1 AD. Work my way to Libralism while trading for Steel prerequisites, and take Steel with Lib. Now you can conquer your continent.

You can lightbulb paper (1), philosophy (1), education (2), and liberalism (1) with great scientists. Note that to lightbulb liberalism, you must NOT have completed machinery since otherwise you open up the printing press lightbulb. It's possible to get a pre-1AD liberalism but if you don't have the land to leverage your tech advantage, it's not very useful. So while it's nice to get the free tech, sometimes it's better to just go on an earlier conquering spree.

You should be able to almost always win the Liberalism race up to Immortal difficulty with practice. You don't even need to bulb much through Emperor once you get the hang of it. The key is to get either Philosophy or Paper first, since that will shift the AIs' tech preferences towards other techs (depends on the AI, of course).

As for trade bait, Aesthetics is always good, HBR is typically good, going for Currency early is usually a good bet, as are the techs on the Liberalism path as long as you're first, but you'll want to delay trading them away. Going for Music after Lit isn't a bad idea either, for the free Great Artist and trade bait.

I have never understood the paper bulb. I throw one into philosophy and one into education, and occasionally one into liberalism if I can get away with putting off machinery. I might use 2.2 great scientist bulbs on average.

Good trade techs that the AI doesn't prioritize are:

    Aesthetics
    Literature
    Drama
    Music
    Compass
    Philosophy
    Theology

Techs you should almost never self-tech because most AI's will get it ASAP:

    Math
    Alphabet
    Iron working
    Monarchy
    Feudalism
    Calendar
    Engineering
    Banking
    Nationalism
    Constitution
    Democracy
    Divine Right

Of course it's situational, sometimes I tech stuff on the do not self tech list because I need it faster then I can trade for it, or I don't want to give any techs for it.

All the later religion techs are good if you get them first or second, because the AIs don't go for them once the religion's gone (even useful ones like CoL). Prior to liberalism the AIs seem to favour military and religion founding techs (although early HBR can be good), afterwards they seem to beeline democracy and physics.

Most AI leaders take forever to research Education once they get paper, so keep an eye on the trade screen and you may be able to go down another research path before finishing Liberalism so you can take something more expensive as your free tech. Don't trade Education until someone else gets it, not just to protect Liberalism, but so the AIs can't build Universities and increase their tech rate as early.

I finally did it, I bulbed with my religious GP but that was enough to do it. I didn't usually bulb past theology but it makes a difference in the early game. I find that bulbing in the end game makes only a difference of 1 or 2 turns if I have a big enough civ so there's little point.
