I only trade if I can get a higher beaker return on my sale compared to an important neighbor or rival. For example, I trade out one tech to three different civs and get several more techs in return. True, by giving out the same tech several times I might give out a lot of beakers, but I will get a temporary edge over my neighbors because in the short run, I have several new techs and they only have one that the others already have from me. I try to avoid trading alphabet for this reason, to keep other civs from trading and to boost myself over my rivals for short periods. This burst in tech can help you topple a neighbor quickly in the early game.

Total tech whore here. I'm just like Mansa. If someone has a tech that I don't have, I must get it. Well, maybe not something stupid like Divine Right. I'll try to keep a monopoly tech as long as I can, but I'm not that worried about trading them off either. WFYABTA? I don't care. I'm make someone Friendly and ignore WFYABTA later on.

I trade to everyone except my victim, but only when I know the tech is about to be discovered by someone else. If I don't trade at all, some other civ gets all the tech trade benefits, funnels their profit into additional tech trading, and takes away the tech lead. Nothing more frustrating than seeing the tech lead evaporate because Mansa was able to pimp out some tech I've known for 100's of years.

I only trade techs with hot-looking leaders.

Agreed - she's not called Catherine the Great for nothing!

But seriously, I prefer to only trade for techs that I absolutely need, and I like to hold alphabet from the enemy for awhile before I actually begin trading.

I'm a tech whore. They're basically free beakers for me, so I might as well take them.

I trade some tech but I don't like trading away key techs during the lieberalism race for instance and I tend to stop trading techs altogether around the modern era. The price has to be right for a tech trade or I see someone is 2 turns from researching it themselves.

The AI seems to trade techs right away, so very soon after one guy gets a tech, everyone will have it. I will trade techs that are already known by someone else very cheaply, because I know that everyone else might already have it next turn, so you have to strike while the iron is hot. If my trading partner doesn't like me, he might play hard to get, but it's better than nothing.

If I'm the only one who has the tech, I will never, ever trade it away.

I trade techs away on a point by point basis. If its an important tech, I'll trade it to my close allies, I'm even willing to trade important techs to them for techs I'd otherwise consider useless just to get me up the tech ladder a bit more. I'm also highly inclined to trading techs with someone I'm about to kill, so what if I trade them a powerful military tech the turn I declare war on them, they won't have time to field anything meaningful before I crush them.

Outside of those situations my techs traded depend on the strength of my opponents. If I'm far down the tech and point score then someone I'm unlikely to trade them even a simple tech unless I get something truly needed just because even though I gain a tech I feel they gained more important lead on me which I want to slow down as much as I can, even if it means crippling me in one area to slow them.

What a nice poll... I have to say, If the price is right, I'm always game :), meaning that unless it's one of those "Optics for 15 gold?" or a monopoly, I might aswell do it if I get a near fair beaker ratio...
Once had an Ai offer me something stupid around 5k beakers for Steampower (8k) and 700 gold... Woah? I think not !

If I am falling behind in tech, I trade very aggressively as a way of staying near the leaders. Good deals, bad deals, I tend to take what I can get if it's the only way to compete with the AI's tech-rate bonuses. It does bother me to help the AI civs become more advanced but trading one tech to multiple civs for multiple techs, still helps me more than them.

I don't trade except for other technologies (within 80% or so of the beaker cost of the tech I'm trading away) or for obscene amounts of money (typically occurs later in the game). I don't trade techs when I would be shelling out something worth more than twice as many beakers as what I'm receiving.

i'm almost mansa-like. i don't tend to worry about WFYABTA, i just trust i'll get somebody to friendly if they'd be useful. and i don't worry about monopolies except for wonders or liberalism-type techs. i just figure i'll use the free beakers i got in trade better than the AI will. doesn't always work out that way, but i still keep doing it :mischief:. i've never played no tech brokering and probably never will, since i'm pretty loose trading stuff away that i got in a trade.

i'll give techs away almost free sometimes. stuff like a pre-req to something i'd rather get in trade than bother with myself. liberalism to get churchill into FR so that i can trade with hatty without having worst enemy issues. constitution to get Gus to use his favorite civic for the bonuses. economics to get them out of merc. added bonus, the diplo bonus helps me bring in tough guys to defend me if somebody i traded an important military tech to decides to come beat me up!

I set all games to no tech trading and no tech brokering. I've even set the past few games to Always War just so I wouldn't have to deal with AI diplomacy at all...that's been...interesting, since I'm not usually too much into military, but that's obviously changed in the past few games ;)

I gotta know! Who on CFC is wearing a chastity belt (voted the last option)?
Have we got a nun around here? :p
Well, I guess I'm the 2nd nun

One of the advantages of trading techs away for gold is that when you trade techs for techs, each civ in the trade is basically getting something for nothing. (in the sense that sharing a tech with someone else doesn't slow your research, your production, etc) whereas when an AI civ gives you gold for a tech, they are giving up gold that they could have used to deficit-research (part of) that tech themselves! Meanwhile the human player gets the chance to do some deficit research (well, that's usually what I do with my gold.)

So you're wearing a negligee :p

And usually what I do with my gold aswell. Unless CRIII units has to be upgraded.

Kmad doesn't need a negligee ;)

I'm a tech whore, but I often wait for the "right moment" to trade, so I voted the second option.
I tend to trade only if I get 2 or more techs for one, up till the moment where I can only trade with 1 or 2 AIs (because the rest is dead or because of WFYABTA). At this point I trade techs asap.

So you're wearing a negligee :p

 i voted the 2nd, since i don't always trade everything the second i get it. but i'm pretty sure i trade techs more than most people, mostly because of my (sometimes over-)confidence that people won't come beat me up before i'm very ready. whereas y'all tend to do stuff like start wars yourselves, before steel even :crazyeye:. that would work maybe once every 4 months for me *giggle*.
