Tech Tree Revisions

I'm still trying to find a good icon for Acoustics and I haven't found anything that definitely looks like it should be right. I put together these four icons and I'd like to know if anyone thinks any of these would be good. If anyone has another icon to suggest, point me to it and I will take a look. I don't want anything that looks like it belongs to a science tech (so no waveforms). This is an artistic tech.

The music staff is by far the best one there.

I agree an organ is much better. I finally put together one I like. I am going to stick with this one.

Well... It looks to me very old-school. I mean like Civ2

If still there is place and time to suggest, how about a concert hall:

I tried it but I really don't like the overhead lighting and I don't think it would make a good icon. I'm still fiddling with the Acoustics icon a little. I'm not sure what to do now. I'm getting a little frustrated with this.

I think this is better. Fewer pipes and I shortened the pipes somewhat. I also went with a cream background.

I'm thinking of going back to the music staff. I think it would be much clearer. This particular icon suffers when it's compressed down to Civilopedia size.

Yellow organ or music staff are okay to me.

So I just hit Industrial era for the first time in awhile. Renaissance was insanely long compared to the other ages, then you hit Industrial and the techs all seem vacant. very few wonders, not to many great people. Entire (at least early Industrial) Era seems empty and devoid of life compared the the earlier eras.

I haven't looked at overall trick density, but I feel the same way about the early Industrial. A lot of the early Industrial techs are infrastructure (especially Factories and Railroads). I think cutting Romanticism and Realism will help a little. The tricks freed up will boost some of the other techs (Great Artist to Photography, Bolshoi to Telegraph).

As far as the Acoustics icon goes, I think my problem with the organs and the music staff is that icons that are based on lines don't look good when the image is shrunk down. Tech icons appear at full size when clicked in the Civilopedia and on the splash screens, but they have to be sized even smaller on the Civilopedia list and for the top-of-screen icons. An icon that relies on narrow lines suffers when this happens.

The only icon I can find that seems to work is the piano icon that is Civ3's Music Theory icon. I think Civ3 icons transfer fairly well to Civ4 because they are already square, not round like Civ5, and are of decent quality without being too cartoonish or too detailed. I want to try it and see what we think after we've played with it for a while.

That looks nice, but how would it look shrunk down?

Why don't you try it? :)
Just zoom out your browser with Ctrl+wheel.
I think it looks better than the organ when shrunk down but it's just a sketch for ideas.

Good idea! It looks fine to me.
