Did anybody ever developed a visual tech tree editor, like dragging and dropping techs and linking them with arrows to indicate predecessors?

If you speak portuguese, read this:

Sim, tenho ligado a esta mensagem um documento Word que permite fazer o que queres.

If you don't read this instead:

Yes, i've attached a Word document to this message where you can do that.

As an extra service, here is the same tech tree mapping, but in a b/w gif format I made some time ago.

Personally I find it a lot easier to cut'n paste in Paintshop Pro, than to move around a zillion txt-boxes and arrows in MSWord. :p

I have already seem things like this Word chart and this GIF picture (and sincerely they inspired me) but what I have in mind is more than this. I wondered an application that generates the Techs section of RULES.TXT from blocks and arrows. If you know Simulink software (used in control engineering) it is easy get the idea. The blocks could be moved in the screen, to determine the age and category of every tech and dragging an arrow from one block to another gives the predecessor. I intend to create this application but before doing it I need to be certain that I am not doing something someone already done.

I am also looking for contributions (suggestions, pictures, programming). If you have any comments, I would be grateful.

Skuall: Yes, I do speak Portuguese but I write in English so everyone understands.

 I don't know of any program that do that, but if you have Fantastic Worlds or MGE(if you don't you can download it from this site in the Patches section)you alter the RULES.txt file anyway.

Play and have fun!

I sure would appreciate such a util. I believe there was a "rules.txt" util developed for Civ2, but it crashed on my computer, for unknown reasons. I don't think, however, that it was as advanced as what you're proposing.

I remember someone proposed a similar concept for tech tree building in Civ3. Might be interesting to see how this works out first.

I usualy use Visio to organize the tech tree.
You can enter your text in the rectanges, and when they move, tha arrows and text stay attached.

I have made a VB code that automatically draws the Tech tree from a list of techs and their predecessors. Next step is to put age and category icons to it but I am still far from what I wondered. I am going to post the code soon.

I am targeting this app to Civ3 because it won´t be ready before Civ3 is released. Hope things don´t change too much.

One thing to notice about Civ3 Tech Charts presented by CivFanatics: there is a Tech with 3 direct predecessors. Does it mean that every other Tech can have 3 pres also?

I can´t understand how Civ sails through the ages. There are no links between the screens. Is it needed to get ALL techs of one age to come to the next?

These two things change my project a little ...
