I find that in games, civilizations are willing to give up more for certain technology. For example, in a game I was playing I offered Theory of Gravity (of course in this scenario I am technologically advanced) to other civilizations making my usual cash rounds. I asked the Germans if he wanted the tech for 50/turn. My advisor told me that it would probably be acceptable so being the greedy person that I am, I up the price to 80/turn. Yet again, it was acceptable. I kept going until I was around 130/turn. I thought perhaps this was a trend so I went around asking the Chinese, French, etc. and they all took the tech for over 100/turn! At this point I was probably getting around 800+/turn when before I was only getting around 100-200/turn. Are there certain technologies that other civilizations are willing to pay more for? Has anyone had similar experiences with other techs?

If they produce a wonder, they are more valuable. Wait until you have the wonder almost built, or have a leader ready to rush it, then trade for a lot of money. As soon as the wonder is built, the price drops. Also, if you are the only civ with a tech, it's much more valuable. As soon as two have it, the cost to build drops, and so does the value. Also, offer price depends on diplomatic relations and amount of cash they have on hand to offer. Your relative strength appears to help also, along with the civ traits and the type of government they have.

Ah! That makes sense. Thanks. It did appear that countries which I got along with good gave me a lot more money for the tech than the ones who were annoyed with me.

To add to Sanaz's excellent advice:

Culture helps too. If your civilization has more total culture than the other civs, the other civs are nicer to you.

This seems to be true in my experiences, but there is also one thing. The fact that different techs. have a different set cost, for example, have you ever played a game were you have two or more techs. you can research? Of course you, we all have. This is because some techs. are more expensive then others, such as horseback Riding and Sythetic Fibers. That's why Horseback Riding takes 30 Turns with only a marginal amount of cash going to research and Synthetic Fibers takes 9 with a whole crap load of cash going to it. Also Have you ever noticed how Philosophy is always cheeper than Mathmatics for example? It's because of the cost of the tech.

SO the more costly the tech., the more money you can get for it, along with the other examples given. One more game example, have you ever noticed how countries will give groves of money per turn for, in this case Theory of Gravity than something like Polytheism? Once again it's the price of the tech.!!!!

I often use this to advantage - by researching techs the AI wont bother with and then selling or trading them for other techs.

The one I use most often is ecology - the Ai will trade just about anything for this in the modern era - it is not unusual to get two other techs plus lots of gpt from the other civs.

A look through the tech tree and studying what the other civs already have can give some clues as to what techs will be valuable to get and then trade.

It works for me.........

On top of the techs that let you build a wonder being worth more, the techs that let you have a new unit are more valuable. Gunpowder is more valuable than Physics. Also Nationalism is much more valued than Sanitation.
