Just want to encourage a vote for writing over pottery.

Building a library lets us get an academy in under 10 turns by running 2 scientists. The 3 beakers generated by a scientist are the same the 3 commerce we would get from a cottage. The +50% research we get from an academy is equivalent to the science boost gained from an oracle CS slingshot.

Our workers have plenty of other stuff to do in the next 10-20 turns and will not need to build cottages right away.

The only sacrifice is the slower population growth without a granary. However, since our cities are food rich this is not a major constraint.

Thanks for adding the research times Provo.

Now, anyone care to suggest what we will be building in our cities over the next 20 turns? How about what our workers will do in that time frame? I really think we need to research something we can put to use right away. I like the idea of getting an academy but ten turns is a long time at this point - then we'd also have to build a library. How long would that take?

I'm still not ruling out mysticism either. We may want a monument in our third city and we still do not know if we can snag an early religion or not.

At this point I can not make aninformed choice. Anyone else care to sway me?

We can build a library right after the scout in city 2, if people got the vision and gut to see that. A worker could chop a forest to accelerate it.

It would take ten turns for writing. How long to build the lib with the chop? How many turns?

I haven't voted yet, but I'm back now and doing some testing of my own.

Archery 5 turns
Mysticism 5 turns
Pottery 5 turns
Writing 10 turns

The techs times are a little bit different as these don't take into account the spillover from AH. Actual times are:

Archery 4
Mysticism 4
Pottery 5
Writing 9 (this will actually be 8 if we work gold once city 2 hits pop2)

Ok, I've done my analysis, you can read details here:

With Pottery, on turn 60:
Spoiler :

With Writing on turn 60:
Spoiler :

The main differences:
  • Going for writing first, the difference by turn 60:
  • We tech a religion one turn slower.
  • We have a slightly higher maintenance (less than 1)
  • We have a higher tech rate +47:science: vs +38:science:
  • City 3 grows a turn quicker, and already has a mine
  • City 2 has been whipped, and is 1 pop lower
  • City 1 is 3 turns slower building worker 3
  • We will have a GS in 7 turns
  • We are only working 1 cottage, as opposed to 3
  • We have one more warrior

btw, I am voting for writing. Does anyone want to change their vote given the new information?

I just cast my vote for writing. The poll currently stands at 5 for pottery and 4 for writing. One vote change would swing it.

Great work Kaleb. :goodjob:

I strongly urge the ones not having voted here to vote writing, and those that voted pottery to writing: We should respect our philosophical trait, as it may really change the game dynamics right now, with the gold, great scientist and library.

I think picking writing is a no-brainer here right now, with the great scientist and research rate from library in place. City 2 also needs to expand culturally, so I really really hope someone changes to writing or vote writing here.

What about our financial trait? Isn't the best way to take advantage of being a financial civ getting the extra gold from cottages? I disagree with writting because it takes too long and we still have to build another library. With all respect to Kaleb's research (Thanks Kaleb). I think we could do better building another worker or two and get more than three cottages. We need to work the cottages ASAP so that they begin to grow... Right? Every turn we delay means the cottages become less and less valuable. We could get attacked by barbs wating to research writing:( In the time it takes to get writing we could have pottery AND archery:) Im voting for pottery.

shame you missed the boat Sommerswerd. We need that research edge to win Code of Laws and Confucianism, or we cannot guarantee a religion. I am happy with most choices up till now, but I consider pottery a major detour right now.

Anyone else voting, please consider that:

We can always get writing, build libraries, and get GScientists/Academies later. HOWEVER...
We can never get back the turns lost working the cottages if we dont start now.

If you think that the lost :science: can never be recovered, I disagree, we can always make up for it later by sacrficing :hammers: or :food: or :commerce: by using more science specialists. I say get the cottages built now... that way we have more options.:king:

Also, since Great People become more and more expensive every time, we should think about whether we want to be in such a hurry to get Great People so soon since they will be useful later on to found corporations research more expensive techs, etc.

The race for religion is now, not later, so we have to make those choices now.

The thing is, the combination of gold, library and academy would make us run much faster for the CoL. We are too damn far into the game to have a guaranteed shot on Hinduism or Buddhism, and the only chance we can guarantee a Confucian win, is by going writing now, and increase research, and then follow the remainder of the tech route to CoL.

Since there is little support for Meditation and Mysticism now, I urge you to consider writing, where you can make a difference.

Well we if we really want to win Confucianism then we can Oracle slingshot to Code of Laws on turn 57.

Mysticism-> Meditation-> Priesthood-> Writing on turn 56.

We also stand to get Buddhism by getting Meditation so soon. This means denying 2 religions and the Oracle to our opponents, more than likely upseting their plans :D

If we don't slingshot someone else might, which means we loose on Confuncianism...

I do not want that slingshot, much better to stick to damnrunners plan.
