I just finished playing crossroads of the world, where you're supposed to amass 30.000 gold. Seems like no AI player was doing that. They were just racing the techtree like crazy, so there were canonballs flying around in 1330 AD. That's nog very historical...

Maybe it's possible to slow the research down a bit.

My only problem with crossroads is that I find it almost impossible to win without taking over most of arabia, I'm probably a bit worse at economy than I thought I was. I thought it would be the most fun scenario for sure. I don't find them racing up the tech tree, I see them trying to win for sure. They usually kick my butt.

One of the keys to winning Crossroads is to max out on the economy of your Guild city (which isn't necessarily the capital). Build market, bank, grocery, etc. My guild city had 5 branches, so 5x+25/round and then +100% from buildings (before Wall Street). For Wall Street you need Banks in six cities, so that's a sub-target. When I last played it, I ended up with 7 cities after a little conquest, but that's as far as I went.

Throughout the game I had 40% on science and 10% on culture, so 50% to generate cash. Staying friendly with the neighbours helps to trade techs. The key opponents were a little ahead of me on the tech tree, but that wasn't a major problem. And don't forget about your cottages.

Good luck beating them!

@ Chriet2003: There is a lot of discussion about time lines in other forums. The entire development isn't supposed to be historically correct to the decade.

Ok, well maybe that will work. I thought maybe it wouldn't be so much of a war mongering game/scenario, but it's not different in that respect to regular games (same AI).

As for the gunpowder, of course there were some medeival canons, but I would give those first canons something like strength 6, not 10... That's more the 19 th century type.

The other Majors are definitely amassing gold. Usually the Mamluks are the first to get to 20,000 (an announcement occurs). Sometimes you have to attack them to knock them down so you can pass them, so fighting definitely comes into the game. Likewise, if you are ahead toward the end almost everyone will declare war on you and you'd better be ready to defend and deal with the war weariness. Lots of gold can be picked up by Raiders. Try putting one in a Galleon and sailing into a city with whom you have open borders. You'll take the city (and should generally let it burn) and get a lot of gold depending on its size and contents.
