In my most recent game, a lucky max sci gambit on Poly in the early game got me a scientific leader. It was basically a choice between the Pyramids or the Temple. Since I hadn't had a chance to play around with the Temple yet, I went for that.

Oh...my....goodness. You know, reading about it, the Temple seemed less than overwhelming, particularly given the fact that the temples disappear when Education rolls around.

It isn't. In fact, it's insanely powerful. I never realized just how much time it took to get temples going in new cities. To just have them there at the start....wow. Your empire expands like you wouldn't believe. Add in an early war, and you will have enormous amounts of land and culture incrediably early.

This thing is a beast. No wonder the temples disappear. If they didn't this monster would be overwhelming.

You also got a lucky SGL. If you hadn't gotten one, you would also have had to shoulder the burden of 500 shields

Yes, and you were lucky enough to reap the benefits very early. If you get a chance to building the temple of Zeus, I've had it in my first two games and oh my, it turned this relatively peaceful builder/hybrid into a warmonger and ended those games quicker than any previous.

When you build the Temple of Artemis, does it replace already existing temples and will already existing temples still dissapear with education?

While the temples dissapear the fact remains that you get the decent borders between cities which remains even when the temple goes. This makes it powerful in its own right even if there was no happiness.

It does replace all temples, and when Education comes around, you have to rebuild all the temples in your empire, including those that were around before ToA.

This is half-correct. The ToA provides a free temple to cities while it is active; if a city already had a temple, all it does is remove the cost for the temple maintenance. Once the wonder goes obsolete, with Education, all the free temples disappear. Any temples you had built previously to the ToA do not disappear; they're still there as a regular improvement, and you pay maintenance fees for them from that point on.

I noticed that it was very powerful for culture my last game. Unfortunately I was not the one to build it, the Sumerians did. They would plop down a city and like two turns later it was pushing back my borders. I found those extended borders to be a real pain when I attacked them with Knights as it was two moves to attack the city with Knights getting picked off for their efforts. Those scum bags were not so fortunate when I rolled over them a number of years later with Sipahi. Very powerfull in the early going though.

Expiring temples is not good but not as bad as it could be though. Worst senario I was involved with were the Zulu's who build the War Academy in Zimbabwe. They declared war on me and I made a beeline for Zimbabwe. Not only did they lose their capital but every single Barracks in their entire civilization. I made a mental note to myself to protect the War Academy at all costs.
