Just wondering what folk get tempted by that deviates from their general strategy.

For me it's culture. When I first settle a city the first thing I usually build is a monument as they give an addition to my overall culture score which benefits the wider civ with bonuses etc.

But I *Know* that it leaves me with less defence for longer than is comfortable and it has also cost me games following this desire when I've been rushed by swords.

What are your guilty pleasures that have cost you a victory?

i have never lost over this but my relations with major civs are always destroyed because i make alliances with all the city states that have uranium or aluminum

I always go monument -> scout -> granary, and i've never lost because of this
Sure, barbarians have came and struck fear in my workers, but that's merely it

I've never worked out the importance of declaring 'friendship' with other civs yet beyond they can wipe everyone's ass off the board and are needed for a bit.

As for my question, i shouldn't have framed it in an absolute. I mean, what guilty pleasures do you indulge in and what effect does it have? Rather than costing you a victory. I guess people can make mistakes and it still not cost them the game. Interesting to hear those stories too.

yeah i start with monument but straight to granary then library

Interesting. But what about worker?

I tend to go monument > worker (on second city if not third) > something else. But i see the advantage in building granary first.

I also discover towards building stonehenge first too like a lot of others do. Again surely it puts me at a disadvantage when being rushed.

liberty policy track takes care of the worker..

liberty policy track takes care of the worker..

Same. I go Monument -> Granary -> Library -> National College

while grabbing Liberties free worker and free settler (directly after my National college).

I find many culture buildings are still necessary because Social policies help every type of victory. In many cases you will require a good cultural foundation to support Piety (for happiness, if warmongering or general happiness problems from growth) or, say, Rationalism/Freedom for a science victory based around specialists.

My guilty pleasures are automating my workers, after the important tiles are done, because I get lazy ;p

Another guilty pleasure that sometimes costs me are building Worker-Worker to start, then getting messed up by 2-3x barb camp.

Another one is attacking the last defender of a barb camp when it says "Decisive Victory" but in actuality I have about a 50% chance of losing my warrior.

I almost always build The Pyramids, followed by Stonehenge. The vast increase in worker efficiency from The Pyramids means you only need a very few workers in the entire game. The first one I usually manage to steal. I don't like wasting social policies for either the free worker or the free settler.

There is nothing at all about building culture buildings & culture wonders that would cause any guilt. As jagdtigerciv says, Social policies help every type of victory. Plus, the individual city's culture makes it expand rapidly.
