As the French, our UU does not come until the Middle Ages, so an Early War would not hurt us GA wise. However, Neighbors must be treated with some respect. Odds are that if we meet neighbors early on in the game, they will have to be dealt with caution. We shouldn't be too friendly with them, but we should not consider them savages who must be exterminated. If I were Minister of Foreign Affairs, I would see to it that we were able to tread carefully over our neighbors. However, if we meet someone like XMan or Shaka or Alex, we need to be even more careful. We do not want to be on the recieving end of a Immortal. It all depends on who we meet.

My apologies for not checking the nomination thread. Anyway, if we met a neighbor early in the game, I feel that we should assess the situation. If that neighbor's capital is guarded only with a warrior, and we feel that we can take them out with our nearby forces, and they are aggressive enough to cause problems with us in the future, we may want to consider an immediate declaration of war with the intent of destroying that civ and expanding our territory in the process. However, in most cases, we should not exterminate them but instead look on them as potential partners in tne future, treating them with caution all the same. Also, we should certainly look at potential trades upon contact with any civ.
