I'm going to use this as an on-going slider discussion thread. While I make no guarantees, I will try to keep this updated by posting a summary after each game session.

Well, we're currently researching Education, but another civilization already has this tech. An option we've got is to turn off research until another civ gets Education, which would give it to us. We'd then kick research high again.

As usual, my guidelines for the luxury slider are to prevent rioting in any city during the game session.

I say that due to the lameness of being able to still use the Great Library after Education has been discovered by anyone, we should just set research to zero until two civs discover everything up to Military Tradition and Free Artistry. That must be the only reason this lame aspect was entered into the game, right? So we could make such a silly decison?

Or....

I say we do what I have been doing for the past three years and complete our research on Education, under the false knowledge that our tech tree provides. After all, it shows the effects of the Great Library becoming obsolete once Education is discovered, so we must need to research it, right? (Wrong). How nice to have finally found out that the tech tree is a falsehood, and we can be free to sit on our collective [booty] to further exploit the efforts of others.

What a dumb exploit. I am shocked that this is common knowledge to everyone, and that everyone is okay with it. I'll abstain.

This is how the Great Library works. Our tech tree is not false, the GL becomes obsolete when Education is discovered, but as our tech tree shows us, we have not discovered it yet. But I doubt that we'll get Military Tradition or Free Artistry out of it. 2 Civs getting FA for example would mean that 2 Civs have education which would mean that we would already have got it free making the Great Library obosolete before we could get FA. MT is more of a possibility but I doubt that they'll research that far before another Civ researches or trades for Education again giving us Education for free and making the Great Library obsolete. This tech, Education, is likely to be only tech we'll get free.

Of course there really is an exploit here (that I do NOT propose we use) and that is to give your Great Library city to another Civ, preferably much weaker just before you get Education. You surround the city so they can not bring in large numbers of defenders, then when large numbers of techs have been discovered retake the city and get all the techs that 2 Civs have (which can take you to FA, MT and even into the next age) plus of course Education. In the meantime you save lots of gold.

In short, stop research for now until we get Education for free then continue on the already decided route to Democracy.

It is false. You shouldn't be able to earn the tech that makes the Great Library obsolete, as it should reasonably be useless at that point.

Do all wonders work like this? Can someone hold off from researching Flight, so that they can hold on to the effects of the Colossus as long as possible --- even though every other nation has the tech?

If so, then Civ2 is the far superior game, because you did not get Education from the Great Library then.

Yep, they all work that way, you have to have the tech that makes them obsolete. If you don't have it the Wonder will still work even if somebody else has it. In the case of the Great Library only 2 other Civs can have it as you will then get it free, in the case of the other Wonders all the Civs could have it and the Wonder would still work until you too got the tech.

I can't say about Civ 2 as I've never played it. This way seems logical to me, but then I've not known different. Of course holding off getting a tech could lead you to get too far behind (apart from the Great Library exploit I mentioned above).
