Terrace farming not so hot:

I tried to implement terrace farming into my game by giving hills one more food post-irrigation. Unfortunately, the resulting image doesn't look so hot. Has anyone tried this before, in-game? I was just fooling with how it would look in the editor.

looks better than irrigating a volcano I'll tell you that much!

I once made a game where everything could be irrigated, with Snoopy's terrain. It really looked kind of ridiculous having hills, mountains, and forests covered in farmland.

Oh how I long for the pretty-pretty farmland squares from Civ 2...

One of snoopy's graphics mimics that. But, the thing I didn't like about Civ2's farmland graphic was that it covered EVERYTHING. You couldn't see the tile below it. IHMO, even Snoopy's irragation graphic can be a bit confusing at times. (i.e., when there's an irragation graphic with 2 mini-tiles of farmland on one side, and you have 2 next to each other). I've mistaken it for a tile sometimes.

Allowing irrigation on hills was one of the very first modifications I made in my mod.

Doesn't look so good, but well, it's just exactly like that in Civ1 and Civ2. You become pretty quickly used to it.

Wich pcx-file is used for hill irrigation? And it is possible to change it to ... let's say tundra irrigation pcx file?

[edit: Wrong forum, I guess.]

And it's impossible to see where the square "borders" without the grid, it's very difficult to move troops in a terrain like that...

If that's true, I think it means your history tests are kindergarten level.

It sounds simpler than the actual situation was. Really it was Civ helping me understand a historical concept, not giving me any actual historical info.

Feh, I'd better just remove the quote if people are gonna misunderstand it.

I miss the old farmlanding from Civ2. It looked much better and modern. In addition you had something more than the railroading to look forward to for your workers.

I agree that hills should be irrigatable in standard civ. Hills are pretty useless outside your limited-corruption zone.

Does anyone know if it is possible to allow terrace farming only later in the game, say, with a different tech? Or, does it have to come when regular irrigation is possible?

Nope, all irrigation comes from the start of the game, unless you edited it otherwise. (Like they did for Conquests #1)

Hmmm ... Irrigating hills, etc. could be interesting, but then people like me who let their workers automate (just too darn lazy to move them around manually) would have to tell my workers to irrigate the hills, if need be. Unless this were built into the game, of course. Those cities that are build on hills, surrounded by hills might actually grow past level 2!!!

Bummer. Too bad you can't have a tech called "Terrace Farming" that allows irrigation on hills. Oh well.
