the big red blob is because of a wrong xml reference in the art/unitartinfos file. the animation is correct, but the actual model that is using the animation is referenced incorrectly
the tech screen buttons are pink for a similar reason, the strings stored in the xml that reference them are pointing in the wrong place
it's relatively easy to cure but you need software that does error checking, and an ability to work with xml files; it's relatively easy, guv

It has to be a bad install I guess.
