He's been my vassal for a few dozen turns, so there's that. Never had a civ just gift me a city without it being forced by AP or UN or whatever, tho. Especially considering it had a strategic resource. Anyone ever have this happen?

Quite a few times. They give you cities crushed by your culture, or barb cities they capture far from them and in your culture. Might be they have to like you to do it though.

Sitting Bull gave me a city once (in BC times, so good timing) He settled near my capitol, and got squished by culture.

I've had cities gifted to me after the city becomes more than 80% my culture.

Gonna show my noobishness with corps here for a minute... does Sid's spread your culture to foreign cities you put it in? Or do you mean you are just squishing them with culture produced by Sid's in your own cities?

I mean I guess it was surrounded by my culture, but it hadn't collapsed his borders and there was no riots or anything. It wasn't a typical revolt/"the citizens of xxx want to join your empire", Qin came to me in a trade screen and said "Here, take this city". I've flipped many cities with culture before, but this was purely traded away to me.

I would say I'd have used it as an espionage target but as you can see there was little Qin had to offer me at that point. That Cuir/seige stack in the picture is the smallest of three I have gearing up to kill SB...

Sushi produces such enormous amounts of culture, that every city near a Sushi-city get's crushed by it. I think you need good relations, then AI will gift the city to you before it revolts. Reload the save and look at your culture in the center-square of the city, normally AI tends to give away cities that have over 60% foreign Culture.
