hi,
i played my first game to the end as default and another civ won the race into space.I note under custom that you can choose and modify objectives but is the default objective of the game to win the race into space only?

There's no default way per se. It's more like the AI tends to win by Space race more often than other conditions (or so I heard). The game ends "by default" at 2050 and then the winner is the player with the most points. But usually before that someone won the space race.

YOu can turn on and off the conditions you want in a cutsom game. so if you don't like space race, turn it off and the AI must beat you with something else. Better though: you win! :)

Time(score) and Space race victories are usually used when your previous strategy didn't work and the game is nearing an end.(there are exeptions but that is how I use them) I sometimes disable these victories so that if one strategy doesn't work, you can just try another. I think it removes the time limit too so you have more time to get the other victory options. Of course someone will eventually get a Culture victory.

I have no use for any victory condition other than conquest.

Any other victory condition is just an excuse waiting to destroy the game rite when your in the middle of doing somthing fun!

The AI is more ot less programmed to head for Space Race victory. At the low levels of difficulty with will never tech fast enough to get there by 2050 and if you haven't won by then the highest scorer will be declared the victor by time. At the higher difficulty levels, the AI will always succeed at space race unless you beat it by getting to some victory condition first, or you beat them all up so badly they can't make it.

I've seen the AI win by diplomatic but that was when I' was trying to win by diplo and it all went badly wrong...

In a custom game you can pick and choose what victory conditions are possible. Removing space race makes it all too easy though because the stupid AI will usually stil play as if it was possible...
