Hello folks,

We're 24 hours or so from release on Steam and we still don't know anything about the 8th civilisation, which I find rather odd. What civilisation do you think it will be and what gameplay focus will it have? Is there a particular set of vassal families you'd like to see?

Hopefully when the civilisation is released we can have some good strategy discussions. :D

Kind regards,
Ita Bear

The Hittites! That's great. Looking forward to see how they play.

I've not played the new civ yet (playing a great Rome game on the Mediterranean map :D) but they seem interesting. Their +2 civics per city is clearly pushing them towards a specialist heavy economy, which I always enjoy. Not sure on how useful or best to utilise their forest removal abilities though. What are your thoughts?

Families wise, until Traders get a pretty significant buff I think it's always going to be Riders, Landowners and Patrons (Patrons will have a base +12 civics per turn!). One opening gambit could be - if you have a food-heavy capital - found Patrons, install Hattusili as governor, rush to developing culture and get specialists like there's no tomorrow.

I'm slightly disappointed to see there's no artwork for the Hittites' special units. Is this in the works?

Kind regards,
Ita Bear

Don't forget Landowners get a 50% discount on all rural specialists. It's pretty insane with an additional +2.

Are the benefits from the shrines empire-wide? Do all infantry get +6 HP when idle or +10 XP?

What does "+1 level for ranged" mean?

These benefits from shrines only apply to units that are standing directly on them.

The "+1 level for ranged units" means all ranged units produced by a city with this shrine will start with an extra XP level. Without other bonuses, your slingers will get out with 100XP, level 2, ready to pick a promotion.

the +10 XP is more of a place to put a unit while you're not using it (not at war), like you could park it for a barrack for the same benefit. The main point of military shrines is the extra military production (bonus training).

And the +6HP healing when idle is only for someone that gets damaged while in walking distance to to the shrine?

See those two things don't seem equivalent.

In general, I don't get what the deal is with the Hittite's starting siltation. Everybody except the one grandson is excluded from succession. Okay, interesting premise. Now what? I don't see exclusion or inclusion as an option when I click on any character, so I don't know how that was done or can be reversed (except by choosing one to be an heir). There are no story events after that. The king starts at 48, he's now 74 and nobody has slipped any scorpions into his pillowcase yet.

I appoint them as generals when I can, promote them when I can, try to influence some. The penalty is simply so big. And it's inherited by all the kids too.

Basically waiting for the king to die. The -10 legitimacy penalty really needs to scale down as the king gets older and decrepit.

So now I'm five generations removed, and that -50 still dogs every step. I have now a very large dynasty where everyone is permanently upset and there's no way to fix it. Was the player's opening move s'posed to be to imprison all the people that started angry at him?

Well, maybe SOMEBODY was listening. From Patch #91:

Heroes of the Aegean Changes:
  • Hatti is now a nation that can be featured in the Game of the Week
  • Adjusted severity of “removed from succession” for the Hittites
  • Fixed Issues in campaigns that potentially blocked progress
Wonder what that means. Bailed on my Hittite game, largely due to this eternal penalty. Maybe I need to load it and see what the change in severity is.

Also PotatoMcWhiskey did an entertaining Hittites play through (on Noble):

(Currently 40,089 views. Mind-boggling what training the Youtube algorithm can achieve ... what Marbozir often addresses and TheSpiffingBrit explained in detail.)

So now only Hattusili's kids are excluded from succession, not their children and all their descendants in perpetuity. If he has more children, they are not affected either (makes sense). Also means the starter heir, the grandson, has a fair chance of getting bumped down the line since his father is only second-oldest.

In short: it's all now pretty trivial now. Hattusili himself is 48 at game start, so his's pretty far into his rein.

Unfortunately, you'll need to start a new Hittite game to benefit from the change.
