This has probably been posted a thousand times, and i apologise if it has. I have the latest version of the game, with the patch.

I chose archipeligo map, large. I was doing pretty well, when I met the Aztecs. So, these Greeks after a few turns decide, "hey!! why don't we attack those people, we'll send our troops over on galleys!!" So they did, and i defended, but i lost a city. I tried to attack them when i got iron but WOW!!!! there was no way to get to them. There was only impassible ocean. Hmmm, maybe I just have to explore more, no, well I guess they can pass over oceans but i can't. Maybe they have a special ability or something. Now, I met the Greeks who also declared war on me for no reason, and the Mongols who did the same. The Greeks start sending over units in galleys OVER OCEAN TILES too.

Now, I build a bunch of galleys and attack, it take about 2 galleys of mine to kill one of their's. But, as long as they dont bring troops. Eventually I block off the thre sea squares next to the ocean squares that they can misteriously travel through. Now, Greece attacks my galleys, I'm ready with their only 39% chance of victory...WHAT!!!??? they won, well I guess I just have lousey luck, I'll finish it off with one of my other galleys. WHAT!!! they one 5 more times attacking me with different galleys. Basically 2 of my galleys beat one of their's.

AND they don't suffer war weariness. I've been at war with alexander for sometihng like 1000 years and now he's the most powerful civilization!? He's the aggressor, he lost all the battles (even though I had to use twice the number of units to kill his).

now I'll post some screen shots.

Monty's culture extends to your shoreline so he can send his galleys to attack you as well as anyone else who has open borders with him.

They dont cheat.... You just dont understand the rules of Galley movement.

Galleys can move in ocean squares incide your own cultural bounderies, so he can perfectly well cross that channel while you cant.

i was at war with him, my galleys couldn't pass. COULDN'T!!!! not just couldn't ebter or war is declared, they COULD NOT. Physically could not. They were unable to. I know how to play the game. I would send one in and the message "this will cause war" didn't pop up, i physically COULD NOT enter. Then when I was at war with Montezuma I still couldn't enter. I'll put up another screenshot.

I dont know which part of the above you dont understand... Galleys can ONLY enter sea square in YOUR cultural borders (and those of your allies). You were at war. You cant use HIS cultural borders. Therefore, you galleys, correctly CANNOT enter a sea square. Everything worked perfectly.

We understand the problem perfectly, and you've already had the explanation. A galley CANNOT enter ocean squares unless they fall within your cultural borders, or those of a civ you have open borders with. Montezuma controls the band of three ocean tiles that border your coast, and hence is entitled to use them. You don't and so your galley's can't use them. You won't be able to use them unless you make peace with and get an open borders treaty with Montezuma, or if your culture takes them over. This is how the game is supposed to work, and in any case it works exactly the same for the human player if the position is reversed so it cannot be classed as "cheating".

in the 3rd screenshot the (enemy) galleys can go into the ocean, if the culture border extends into it.

It's not your culture, so you can't.

As for your problem with war weariness, you are at war with multiple civs and have lost more units and cities than they have. Losing units and cities have more of an effect on war weariness than just plain being at war. You have lots of war weariness because of your losses. If Alexander lost 1 unit for every 2 units you lost, your war weriness would be double what his is.

You problem with losing more Galleys is nothing more than bad luck. I have lost multiple battles that I should have won and won multiple battle that I should have lost. It all evens out over time.

Thats interesting. One cannot use the ocean squares of the enemy in a war. Conclusion: build culture in the own cities at coasts, this prevents such ugly situations, sign open borders with neighbors of civs you may want to attack.

This applies only to galleys.

Well... couldn't hurt. :-)

sign open borders with neighbors of civs you may want to attack.

Long as the border stays open that can do the trick.

What I'd like to know is why you have such a large empire and haven't even learned Code of Laws yet. :O
