Yeah TBH I think the one game I played as Ethiopia I flipped a southern Egyptian city, so I was probably v lucky. Another suggestion would be researching sailing and settling south Africa for the metals ASAP.

I also find that on Monarch RFC can be very varied with the amount of barbs/natives that turn up. Some games I hardly notice them and sometimes you feel really overrun.

I always try to, so camel archers, elephants, etc don't take me out.

DoC removes the barbs for Persia, so no need.

If you mean the Seljuks, I don't have SVN, so it still good:D
And you win before the Mongols.

Oh yeah, the Seljuks as well. Do you mean you win the UHV before the Mongols spawn? Because I don't usually go for the UHV, so they destroyed me when they came.

Build a couple (a lot of) Immortals and they'll defend you against anything up to non-barb camel archers, they're that powerful when promoted to at least three stars. They'll eventually feel obsolete against riflemen or infantry (literally), but by then you should have won, or in case you don't care for UHV have means to upgrade your army to something more formidable. This applies to original RFC of course.

I've always liked the Great Wall anyway so I can take the vast majority of my troops when I'm conquering. The barbs come in waves so I've found that even a couple of Immortals, good as they are, still fall. It could be just that the Great Wall gives me one less thing to worry about - I like to simplify my games.

With the Aztecs was my more fun game. Other fun civ is Russia. With the civs that have good tech speed it ends being boring, fighting muskets with advanced tanks.
