What is currently the most used mod?

Hard to say. A lot of mods are heavily used - Fall From Heaven 2 and its mod-mods, Rise of Mankind and its A New Dawn mod-mod, Rhye's and Fall of Civilization and its variants, and various others have many followers. BUG could be said to be the most used since it is popular on its own and also incorporated into many other mods. BUFFY is pretty popular - and you have to use it for the official CFC competition games and Hall of Fame games.

The most downloaded mod is Fall from Heaven 2. You can get stats for that over in the Downloads section.

What is the most expansive?

Caveman 2 Cosmos is definitely the largest. You need a good computer, preferably with a 64 bit version of Widows with at least 4GB of memory and a graphics card with a GB of memory or more on it, to play it to completion. If using a 32 bit version of Windows you need to set it to allow the application to use around 3GB instead of the usual 2GB or you will almost certainly have problems finishing a game on even just a standard size map. It's really really huge. Really. And it isn't even done yet.

What is the most stable?

Hard to say. A lot of mods are completely stable for single use play, fewer for multiplayer (there is a relatively new thread trying to list which mods are multiplayer compatible).

What is currently being worked on?

Many things. Many, maybe most, of the mods on the first page of the Modpacks sub-forum are being worked on, and some that are not listed there. The recently posted May update for Civ4 (on the front page - click the CFC banner above) lists things that have been released in the last two months or so, including new versions of most mods released in that time. There are probably more things than listed - it is compiled from posts in the Announce your new/updated Civ4 files for frontpage coverage! topic in this forum (up in the sticky posts) so if you forget to post there it doesn't get shown in the update. There is also the Modpack list topic in the Civ4 - Modpacks sub-forum which includes a status for a lot of mods.
