The CivFanatics Fortress

Hey guys the Dwaf fort thread seems very active:
So some newbie advice if you will.

1. How do I break up my wagon for wood
EDIT: found it [t], move to the wagon, [x].

2. How do I destroy my bridges / roads as I want to build a better one
3. How do I get rid of all that damm stone (I guessing selling them useless stuff but didnt have trade deport up in time.
4. Awful Misas everywhere for some reason. Problem here is the Butery after slaying the dead mules theres corpses on the ground for some reason.

cheers guys

Same as wagons.

Stone laying on the ground doesn't block anything (except for buildings, then the builder will move it out of the way) so there is really no point in moving stone around into stockpiles, Dwarf labor is spent better elsewhere. Now it bugs people to death that there's stone everywhere, which I respect. It bugs me to death that most of my fortress is moving stone when it could be doing better things.

Now, you be using stone for just about every piece of furnature, except for beds, and you can never have too many doors.
4. Awful Misas everywhere for some reason. Problem here is the Butery after slaying the dead mules theres corpses on the ground for some reason.
Make a refuse stockpile outside of your fort. p-r

One pro miner is usually enough. Since he or she will do all the work, she will turn legendary very soon. Advantage: Ore and gems have a much higher probability to survive when mined by a legendary miner. (ore 100% ?)

As for the stones, you might want to have a small customized stone stockpile near the masons workshop just allowing light and dark stones for high quality furniture.

mh

I suggest we leave some space between the entrance and the initial fortress unmined so we can place whatever future defences in that area. 10-15 squares should be enough if we want to build a moat.

Although, as vbraun mentioned they make excellent soldiers also.

How about I build a small 2x2 path to get into the original fortress as a temporary entrance. Once we get the fort up and running, we can build a grander entrance with the full defenses and shut/close off the old one.

Edit: I'll start the first two seasons later tonight. Right now I believe the plan is the following, correct?:

2 miner
1 mason/mechanic
1 carpenter
2 growers
1 stone crafter

Resources:
2 dogs
Split the rest between Plump Helmets/Alcohol.

post some screenies please :D

First two seasons played (actually one and a half). It is currently mid-summer 14th... so your be picking up the save a bit early. Because I'm running out of time and have a breakfast date in barely half an hour ;).

You can look at the fortress here.

I made a stupid mistake, forgot to leave enough room to expand the hallways later and also built the food stockpile to close to the river . However, if we do plan on building a seperate "main entrance" then I think it will be mostly fine. Discovered a outlet to the cave river that kind of screwed up my design scheme, but otherwise were good.

Save zipped and uploaded here. Just extract the folder and paste the contents into your data/saves folder. Although, make sure you don't already have a region named "region1" so you might want to rename it.

Nasty surprise with that river. I think I'm starting to build centralized industry with a large warehouse. Maybe south but I will make my final decision after I've seen it in the game.

The workshop area will look something like this. Larger or smaller, but I intend follow the pattern below. It's easy to expand later on.

The waterfall isn't that bad, it's just as I said.. it kind of messed up my design scheme. If you can, open up an area where dwarves can get to the waterfall itself. They like the "mist" I believe. Makes for a good indoor garden area for dwarves to spend their free time.

There's much resources near the river branch to dig so the idea is tempting.

Spring has arrived!

And not too soon since we're low on food. Not starving for it but low nonetheless. Although it says there's not plant/meat food left there should be some tasty meals. I managed to get some industry up & running. Dug to the chasm and set some traps in there just in case. We've got mechanisms and silver battleaxes if we have need for weapon traps, or need to arm ourselves. I planned green glass statues for the waterfall room. Everyone has a room now, but not all rooms are fully furnished.

Most of the stuff I sold to the caravan has returned to our warehouse since elephants killed the other caravan trader and his mule.

I was wondering if we could trap some live elephants and train them?

Here be the save

I forgot to take screenshots :/

Who's up next?

Rhien can you post a quick snap of your workshop layour for us newbies ?
I've still in the first year and over the river in my game with three large farm plots going (Built them wayyy to big)

and now looking to start smelting though in my map I have only stockpiled four wood and it is a dangerous gamble to go out and harvest the scares trees that are outside,

This is from my own fortress. I think the storages turned out better in the CFC Fortress however. I don't know how everyone else does it, but I like that everything is in the same place. I've got my glass production running full speed so soon every workshop will be made of classy green glass blocks. I also left room to expand the farms. 43 inhabitants, winter 1053.
