Hello. I have a few questions about the combat formula for Civ3. I have a formula that works pretty good, but what I must ask is how and when are the defense bonuses calculated? At which step in the formula are these bonuses calculated? How are they calculated? Please help me on this, I am trying to make an Excel calculator for this and wish to be accurate as possible.

thank you all in advance.

I find it interesting that with this, and with that Culture Flipping nonsense, people seem to be considering manual calculations even with a computer in front of them.

All these formulas should be an option OF THE GAME: we hit the right keys and the percentages come up, if we want them.

Of course, in any battle luck should also be somewhat of a factor.

There should be no need for separate manual calculations; it should all be done by the computer as part of the game.

Zouave ??
for a civ fanatic u dont seem to like civ??

Theres Criticism....

and then there is constructive Criticism ;)

What do you like about civ ???- im interested

Well...

First, to da dog: I assume that defence bonuses are calculated beforehand, to improve the defenders strength (i.e. 50% bonus over a 1/2/1 spearman would make him a 1/3/1)

Second, in line of zouave's thoughts: wasn't that already done in civ:ctp2?? I'd be nice if it could be done in civ3. Apart from that, I like the mass-attacks of ctp2-armies much better: complementing units, ranged artillery assault combined with front line infantry, backed up by tanks...awesome.

But then again, I don't play civ3 for nothing...

i agree with zoave, think of the panzer general series. it always projected the outcomes of battles for you. of course these were only "projections", but at least it gave you an idea of what to expect.

CTP is lame... May the real CIV please step forward.

On the topic; CIV tries to make the game as "real" as possible, none of this let me calculate my odds crap, within the game. You never see a field general calculating their odds before the enter a battle they just assess the field and say, "Hey, lets kick some butt", or "Well this is going to be tough," or "We're all going to die!"

I for one will leave it up to the computer to calc. the odds, I will just play. I would however like to know what I am up against, i.e. army size of the other team, or even see the total number of units within a town before I strike. I think that even back in the old days armies had an idea of what they where up against.

Thus, you want the numbers I, as do I, but I would rather see the numbers reflect their army strength, and let me decide the odds of the battle.
