The Computer Knows Best: Re-Boot

Good stuff Whosit. Thanks for the great write-up!

I'm doing a little internal dance for joy ... Mining being researched in the first turnset!

Tech' situation;

... and nasty little red culture dot to our north east ... possibly Russia. It's a bit squishy, probably worse for Sitting Bull however. Wait to find Copper before looking at settling Vienne? I suppose that's up for whether we can research Bronze Working, but I've found that it's typically offered up once we get Mining. Other Settling thoughts in terms of heading towards the opposition or otherwise?

Play like a game of Tic tak toe, plant a city fair and square in the middle. Control the Centre ground, Politics of the masses, grab the central platform.

But we have to wait for the computer in its 'infinite wisdom' to grant us a city site.

Looks like BW should be in a turn or so after the settler so yeah maybe wait a touch, not that the computer cares about our petty concerns for defense.

Gonna be crowded, lets get any settlers we can out there.

Hmm, yeah, maybe somewhere on the river to the northeast. Maybe 1SE of the lake to grab the floodplains, although it isn't otherwise a pretty spot. But I'd prefer going for some "reach" spots to try and keep the enemy AI at bay.

Nice report Whosit! I think I'm up so got it probably for this evening (CET). Will try to settle according to the rules...

T21 Mouse and our unnamed warrior continue exploration of the vicinity.

T23 A new tech comes in:

And Its Holiness gives this choice

Since maybe we'd best get worker techs in order for a worker to show up in the build queue, we choose the wheel. :mischief:

T24 Our brave warrior spots a hut from which we get an extremely lucky break.

The warrior is bestowed with a Name and shall henceforth be known as The Wireman, as the first discovery of metal naturally means a great breakthrough for our understanding of Its Holiness.

Of course this pops up:

And we are in Slavery.

T26 We are informed by BUG, an entity that would later be seen as the Great Prophet directly descended from Its Holiness, endowed with the task to make the ways of Its Holiness clear to mere mortals, that we can whip the settler in Motherboard. I look hastily in the rules whether that means we have to whip or if that is a free decision for Brennus to take. As I see nothing mentioned, I let Brennus show something of his own personality :whipped:.

T27 Settler is ready to go and we go for another warrior.

T28 We get a choice of blue circles. Since The Wireman is far away and wounded and cannot protect the settler I choose the blue circle to the NW. It looks like the least risky to settle moving there from the jungle SE of it and settling immediately.

T29 We settle the lakeside town of Floppydrive. We get a rather horrible choice for first build.

Finally I decide for the not very useful Dun. I'm afraid we'll get that forever in the queue anyway and at least our Floppydrive can grow and hence whip it at a certain point.

T30 In tragic news we hear that The Wireman who was healing from a lion attack is killed by a wolf. Well, only the good die young and he'll be remembered for thousands of generations to come. Meanwhile, Mouse survived a panther attack but needs some healing.

T31 We get another tech.

And a choice:

Pottery it is.

T32 We meet this guy coming to our borders from the east.

T34 Warrior done in Motherboard and get an easy choice.

T35 Hand it off here with a picture from the empire and the surroundiings.

This is what we know:

I started wandering off with the warrior that got built on T34 but on second thought maybe he'd better stay closer home. Or, on third thought, maybe he can go scouting but then I think we may want archery as next tech (given the choice...). We'll need some city defences for when human barbs show up, although likely that'll take a while still. But better be prepared than sorry, of course. :)

Oh, one last thing, I noticed that when you select "Examine city" when given the build queue that sometimes on exiting the city screen the choices change. Go into the city again and it can change again. It seems kind of cyclical as the first choices come back after a while. I presume we'll have to go for any of the first two choices given...

Copper in our borders, a pretty decently placed second city, and not-too-shabby land to our south-west. Nice!

Shame about the build choices in Floppydrive, but we'll see plenty more of that. How badly are we going to need those Cows (Monument)? I know we can whip it to shreds, but a few hammers would surely be a priority(?). Hopefully Hinduism will leak over there first.

I'm not a whipping arithmetic expert, but is that Work Boat whipped out the sooner the better, and I presume we go for another Work Boat if we can, even before a Worker or a Warrior if we should get so lucky?

'Yes' ... I think that it would be against the spirit of the game to cycle through choices for builds, as tempting as it is!

Oh Lordy. Willem. A leader that's actually quite likely to win the game.

Thanks for your write up and your sage management of the Machine God's will. :)

I was thinking that maybe best is to whip the workboat when we just hit size 3 (in 3 turns IIRC). Then at least we're size 2 in case we get the choice of building a worker or settler which surely must be better than building it at size 1 while temporarily not being able to grow. If we wait a few turns there'll be a bit more overflow as well, of course.

It's a good point. I was split between "I want it, and I want it now!" and letting the population grow. It's the game variant that has me unsure, as we can't plan anything for certain ... if we go with a Worker as the next build, then we should be working two tiles, not one. If we opt for a second Work Boat and a Warrior before the Worker, then I 'suspect' we should try a more whip-and-grow type approach.

I'm happy to bow to the views of you guys on this.

Nice write-up yourself, nocho! Pretty good luck, although the loss of The Wireman is a sad one. I also like your choice of names for the second city!:goodjob: Now I'm tempted to make a list of possible city names:

-Monitor
-Processor
-Vidcard
-Soundcard
-RAM
-Harddrive

Etc. Heh heh.

Anyway, I agree that the Workboat should be whipped either 1 turn before growth, or 1 turn after. Are we on normal or epic speed? Each pop is worth 30 hammers on normal, and 45 on epic, so keep that in mind when you calculate overflow. In this case, it's probably better to improve food output before worrying about maxing overflow.

A monument in Floppydrive would be nice, but it has (irrigated?) rice already, but nothing matters if we don't get a Worker.

We probably should pick up Archery soon so we can produce actual garrisons. That is, if the great Computer believes it is necessary. :worship:

Just so you know, or already know, No bat 4.2 installed, no mods nothing,

Doh, edited, I've looked and seen the turn sets, 20,15,10..... sorrwie

I've also added unit recommendations to my config list, seems to be in the spirit of the game. And hold pop-up's till units have moved...maybe not, I'll remove that one.

I play 10 only, seen in time...

Nice turn, bronzeworking from a hut! :woohoo:

The variant makes whipping rules obsolete, we can't whip max overflow into a worker or abuse multipliers if we don't know whats next so I'm of the opinion that just whipping like mad is the way to go, try and get at least 2 pop whenever possible.

Archery will be nice at some point as we can't count on anything being hooked up anytime soon.

It doesn't make the whipping rules completely obsolete. Overflow is still overflow. But, yeah, we're probably better off just whipping and getting on with it.

Look forward to your report, IPEX.

IPEX,

Glad you've got the save so swiftly.

I had thought 20 turns for Whosit, 15 for nocho, and 10 from that point, but I couldn't be happier if you and Gocho want 15 each.

Whosit,

We're on 'normal' speed.

Gocho,

We can't rely on the Machine God actually recommending Archers just through acquiring the Archery tech' in my experience, but a 10% chance it will is better than our current chance. I agree, I'd like to have some chance of it allowing us to build an Archer or a few.

(General)

On whipping, we'll obviously look at a Granary soon in Motherboard as well as another Work Boat and a Worker, let alone a city garrison or anti-barb' unit. I'm really unsure which direction to go with Motherboard ... Worker first or Worker last.

Worker ASAP! That first one is likely to be the only one we get for a very long time, get him to work. A granary/worker choice might make me cry though.

I will follow IPEX's lead on 10 or 15 turns.

P.S.

Don't go see Daybreakers, wow what a horrible waste of 90 minutes.

Workers any time for me as well! The granary probably will pop up sooner rather than later anyway.

Brennus and Divine guidance

T+0

Inherited turn, computers smoking and spitting out sparks...

“Oh holy one, what is thy divine guidance” Chants Brennus in a drunken stupor.

The Screen remains blank, Brennus is confused..what to do...do I hurry production of the work boat at the cost of 1 of my minions, at what cost/benefit

Cost = 1 population
Benefit= 3 hammer over flow.

Current production is 2 hammers, best to grow population and whip at 1 turn remaining to max overflow of hammers, or do I maximise growth? Hmm decisions, decisions...

Brennus reaches for his Tankard of Ale, Bless the Celtic empire for Ale.

“No” He muses, “I'll wait for 3 turns, grow the population by 1 point then whip, maximising the regrowth with the Clams and +1 commerce.

With no other earth shattering decisions to be made, Brennus retires for the night with his Comely mate and awaits the new dawn and new decisions in the morning.

T+1

“Ugh” Grunts Brennus, “No word from your divine guidance system, call up Technical support and find out what's wrong”

“What, what do you mean we haven't met INDIA as yet?? How am I supposed to know what to do without any Technical support??”

“My lord Brennus, No word from our warrior scouting to the north, contact was lost with the Dutch warrior, and its FEARSOME CLUB. Our Scouting unit to the West has reported a sighting of a copper resource and wine” Recites the scribe, reading from the daily report.

“WINE!!” roars Brennus “YES MORE WINE!!!!”

Brennus grabs his nubile mate and retires for the night.

T+2

“Sire..More wine resources are reported from your scouting group to the West, our warrior heads to the forested hills, to Guard our Eastern approaches against incursions.” Spouts the scribe from his daily reporting sheet.

Brennus just grunts, blearily opens one eye, grunts again to acknowledge the report, rolls over and grasps his companions waist.

T+3

“SIRE, please these reports need your acknowledgement” Pleads the scribe.

Brennus grunts, arises from his bed, blearily grabs the sheet and puts his mark upon them.

“Whip that work boat for +7 hammer over flow, the extra food and commerce it brings in, will accelerate our growth, have that warrior fortify its self upon that woodland hill to the East. So our scout defeated a barbarian wolf, Whilst hiding in the foliage of a jungle and cowering behind the river, no further honours are to be bestowed upon them, till they fight a worthy foe, now leave me to my 'Royal matters' “

Brennus dismisses the scribe, grabs his mate amidst a gale of laughter, and roars as he resumes his umm , royal duties.

T+4

“Sire”, screams the scribe as he runs in breathless “Sire, we have contact with another civilization, the American's lead by FDR, the Free marketer Mercantilist. (an oxymoron if ever there was one, a Free marketer, espousing a socialist economy.) they lie to our west, where your beloved Wine and Copper resources were found.”

“Trade, that's how we get the wine, Trade. Why labour and toil in the hot sun, when we can just trade away our excess goods, and revel in the luxury of wealth.” Brennus snorted. “keep relations cordial, don't violate national sovereignty, YET. “

Note, I cycled though the city screen initially got a dun/settler,

(Military/Growth) then it stabilised at Monument/warrior Culture/Military) this seems to be in the spirit, as its what the computer has decided it wants, if not, I'll just take 1st option from now on, once I enter the city screen.

Sorrwie.

T+5

“Sire”, whispers the scribe, who's face is bruised and lips swollen, “our scouting unit has received experience from a tribe to the south of FDR's lands, we have finished researching pottery and selected MONOTHEISM muah hahahahhahahaha  :crazyeye:

Spoiler :
Suckers Nah archery.

the clams are being harvested, and a warrior will be whipped at T-1 from growth and production”

“Thank you scribe” Mutters Brennus “Please keep me informed of our divine guidance , from the Blue box, and pass me another keg of Ale. “

T+6

Hmm the scribe is unsighted, rumours abound of a visit to the healers, the 'divine computer' :badcomp: remains silent on moves, Brennus snores away, sleeping off that last Keg of Ale.

T+7

“Sire,” the scribe exclaims, with a wince, “the warrior in production has been completed with the pressing of some of the local populace into the military, our Scouting unit, Mouse, is being shadowed by an English Scouting unit to the South of FDR's lands, but alas our population has fallen to 1, with a birth due tomorrow.”

“Tell me of the guidance from the divine computer tomorrow, My head still hurts.” Mumbles Brennus clasping his head in pain.

(Warrior whipped for 44-15 overflow or 29 hammers, with regrowth next turn.) :goodjob:

T+8

“Sire, daily report just in, Mouse, our combat 3 scouting unit, has finished the day's movement upon a forested hill top, next to a barbarian bear unit. Production in motherboard was either another scouting unit in 1 turn with 14 over flow hammers, or a dun with 21 remaining, the Dun was selected, for the Guerrilla promotions available to new units. Our new warrior has been fortified in Motherboard, as we can't afford to lose this city to a sudden Barbarian onslaught. Archery due in T-2 day's, the divine Guidance system has spoken” Chants the Scribe, eye's glazed in reverence to the Controlling computer system.

T+9

“Sire, the mouse has roared, defeating the Barbarian bear, with only some minor healing, the English scouting unit is unsighted, Production continues apace in the cities, Mighty walls from your omnipotent guidance system continues apace.” recites the awe struck scribe.

Brennus grunts, scratches his flea bites, eats the remains of his meals, drains the last of his tankard and rolls over and goes back to sleep.

T+10

“Sire, Archery is complete, the bowers are now able to manufacture bows, But the divine guidance system, not allowing a save before a Tech was selected, :badcomp: only gave the option of Sailing (growth) or Iron working (military), which do you wish to select.?” Queries the scribe

“Ah, to work, well Minions, we may either sail the Coastal waters, like scared little children, not wishing to leave mothers skirt tails, or we can be MIGHT WARRIORS” roars Brennus “Feared and noble, strong and ruthless, nimble in the hills, with a mighty broadsword and fearsome tattoo's,”

“Which do you wish, scribe ” sneers Brennus

“Umm, errr.”..Stammers the scribe, seeing for the 1st time Brennus fully arisen from his bedding.

“Iron working?” he meekly squeaks.

“IRONWORKING?' ROARS Brennus “IRONWORKING??? that is for the labourers, the miners to dig in the dirt like pigs, do you think I'M A PIG, TO ROOT AND SCROUNGE IN THE DIRT like AN ANIMAL?” Brennus screams at the scribe, face aflame.

“No, no no, sire, your a MIGHTY WARRIOR, NOBLE AND STRONG. Feared, nimble and quick with your blade and benevolence” the scribe quickly replies, with steel in his voice.

“For the Celtic peoples are the true leaders of this world, and to lead, one must be strong, wise and generous. For how would the others deem to follow us if we cannot lead ourselves, defend ourselves and our minions and possessions. Sailing will come, when we allow our neighbours to grow fat and wealthy, producing the luxuries we desire. No IRON WORKING is the only choice, ever wise is your Guidance system” Replies the scribe, eye's glazing over at the intonation of the benediction for the Computer guidance system.

Here I pass it over, to wiser hands, Motherboard Needs to grow, and whipping it to one population won't help in the long run, better to build the Dun, grow in the turns and whip from a much higher population base. Defence is set, 2 warriors :lmao: scout heals for 1 more turn, maximising commerce and food in cities, Iron working should drop with the growth of population.

Floppy drive can be whipped in 4 turns, I'd recommend leaving it for 7 and whipping at Growth T-1, (make sure it'll still be T-1 after losing 2 food to the whip, might allow for a better production option. Motherboard, you will see what's best.

On Growth and production after whip, maybe because I whipped at Growth T-1, is why Production options changed?, production selection is given BEFORE growth is applied? But then remains stable after, so I believe this is better way, as its steady in its recommendations after 3 cycles. (that's me)

I've used emphasise food and commerce buttons in cities, 2 gold and 2 food is best fit, no workers so what else you going to do?

Units left unmoved, though the scout is healing for 1 more turn, and warrior entrenched on forested hill to the East, and another entrenched in Motherboard.

I pass it onwards. p.s. can't upload picture to photobucket at moment?? will edit later.

I am suscribing to this just for the laughs.

Slobberinbear did a Dubya RPGSG with similar rules, and I believe that team found that if you park your scouts the AI will stop suggesting them after three or four are alive, so some dug-in fogbusting may be in order.

So we are now drunken computer slaves, I like! :goodjob:

Great writeup IPEX! I got the save and will try and play/post tonight.

Brennus builds walls!

Turn 0- Brennus awakes full of energy and a bit of wine still and saunters over to the holy machine to see how "his" empire fairs. "Hmm, it seems I'm not needed anywhere" feeling a little unneeded he orders his brave warriors to the northwest to look for barbarians by the garrison free city of Floppydrive.

Turn 1- "I think it's time to carry on the journey" Mouse tells his fellow scouts. "Let's carry on westward and hope to avoid any more vicious beasts."

Back at the capital Brennus declares today to be the first annual "We love our machine overlord day" Forever after known strangely as WLOMOD confusing new citizens for all time.

Turn 2- Hangover from WLOMOD, no work today.

Turn 3- "Sir, we are in some trouble. We have wildlife coming at us from all directions, bears to the north and a panther spotted in the area also. What are your orders?" Mouse pauses and thinks what his brave liege would do. "Ok boys, we are going to run for it" as he takes a stiff drink. "May the machine watch over us."

We hold of whipping the Dun in Motherboard until it's ready to grow, also still a little drunk for work of that nature.

Turn 4- "Where are my scribes it's time to get to work" yells Brennus who has finally recovered after the hundred year hangover. The scribes arrive as Brennus goes over the current state of "his" empire. "What the hell is Floppydrive doing" he yells "Our great and wise Computer lords demanded walls built centuries ago and all you have to show for it is a few drawings?!"

"My lord" the scribe trembled out "It's the terrain, our engineers inform me it is quite unsuited for building walls such as those, perhaps if we were to somehow improve it?"

"You doubt the machines wisdom! Sacrilege! Guards take this man to Floppydrive and hang him and the engineer for all to see what happens when they delay our gods will, maybe whip them a bit first" As the guards take the doomed scribe to his fate Brennus relaxes knowing soon his walls will be built.

Turn 5- A picture... 1000 words

Never doubt the machines wisdom! :goodjob:

"Ok guys we finally lost that group of bears but we got sightings of even more up ahead, were going to have to fight them at some point as they seem to be boxing us in. We are going to try and head west along the poles and see if we... look out!"

*insert awesome tale of vicious fight with panthers*

Mouse looks sadly at whats left of his brave scouts, "Guys I know your hurt and we all lost some friends today but we got bears to the north and behind us, we got to keep moving"

"Where sir, we are in no condition to scout or fight anymore"

"West my friend, hopefully we can drop out of sight in the woods and lick our wounds"

Turn 6-

Brennus takes the day off in honor of not being in last place. Mouse runs for his life.

Turn 7- "Ah, another fine day in paradise" exclaims Brennus as he wanders his capital city. Perhaps I will check on the progress of our Dun. "Sir, I would advise against that, the engineers here are not as hopeless as the ones in Floppydrive but their progress is slow."

"I will look into it personally sir and have them up in no time!" cries the scribe as he notices the frown on his lieges face while promptly running off.

"Ahh it's nice to have a kingdom run so well by itself" :whipped:

Mouse and friends finally see no animals around and hunker down in the woods to recover.

Turn 8-

Things are getting crowded so I figure the settler is going to be needed sooner rather then later.

Turn 9- WLOMOD

Turn 10- WLOMOD

The world we know

Apparently SB knows writing as we can now open borders with him if we feel the need too. Scout hasn't seen a bear for a few turns but there are 2 around him somewhere.

Very little happened of any note in the 10 turns.
