The Council

Received from The Council while we held Turn 279. We got this on August 28; three days ago. I expected something from them around the time we got the turn, so I didn't bother to check until now.

This came to us in one large paragraph, and the indent. Except for the heading and signature this is just about what it looked like.

Dear Blues,

We were saddened, but not shocked, to receive your letter and read your new post in the UN. After all, the years of Grima Wormtounge Chamnix whispering in your ear about our "imminent space launch" was bound to take effect at some time. You have no big reason to believe us (other than the fact that we've never lied to you before) - but we can assure you that our tales of heavy suffering at the hands of Saber's bombers were no exaggeration.
We are currently a great many turns from being able to launch our SS. Our initial plans were to try to complete all our builds within 1-3 turns of each other (no doubt, this is what you assume we’re doing). However, the devastating bombing and repeated sabotages from Saber spies forced us to abandon that plan. We had to just finish SS parts as we were able to protect them from being destroyed – and to free up those cities that still have production capabilities for building military units. Now we’re in the awkward position of being (for-real) at war with everyone, having craters where our factories once stood, and the truth is we’re still a loooong way away from being able to finish the SS Engine. Our team narrowly voted against revealing our exact SS launch timeline before we have an agreement with you, but we are willing to reveal that we’re over 10 turns away.
We totally understand why you're choosing to attack... but you should know that this is Saber's dream scenario - you're handing them their best chance to win. If you don't like your odds for taking the fight to Saber (even with the overwhelming bulk of their troops right off our coast) What would you think if we offered you all the techs you need for a Space Ship launch, in exchange for renewed peace? We could begin tech transfers immediately upon you going back to peace with us. (we’d want some minimum turns of peace, and a “no nukes” clause if we’re giving you a ton of tech – but that can be easily worked out if you’re even open to the idea?) You should know that Saber just sent us a letter (ironically only a couple days before your war declaration) trying to get Space Flight from us. We're actually still in the middle of trying to negotiate a cease-fire with them (which they offered, but we're trying to get a longer one) in exchange for it. Now, we don't know if they're counting on you to attack us and then they're going to put all their industrial power into a Space Ship... or if they're just planning to Nuke you into the stone age after we've been destroyed. Either way - the only thing that's going to make us sadder than losing is watching Saber win after we're gone. Please consider our offer. With Saber doubtlessly planning to renew their attacks when our cease-fire expires (and us being 10+ turns away from launch even if all goes well... which it clearly will not) you could have a shot at winning without turning on your brothers in blue.

Respectfully yours,

The Council

Dear Wise People of The Council,

Just a quick note while I still have an internet connection.

Team Free would be interested in your peace offer.

We pulled back all our boats from your waters, even ignoring a sub that Sub Seeker passed by as it headed 7S from off the coast of The Nursery.

We did not send peace, however. But we will accept it, if accompained by techs. It will take about 3 turns to make the tech transfers, but you already know this.

We see that Orange wants to make Orange Fireballs and have mushroom clouds. That could be very nasty. (They should be in SGOTM10 (BtS) if they want to play with the neat-o toys!)

Dear Brothers in Blue, Your last letter was received with much rejoicing. While history may show that we just gave the game away – we still won’t regret it. At the end of the day, we’d rather watch a FREE space-ship leave us behind on its way new worlds, than fight our brother blues while the Saberites sweep to domination. When you get the save, you’ll find that we’ve put peace and Space Flight on the table for you. Some of our fishermen caught sight of an enormous stack of your transports off our coast – so you’ll understand why we made our offer without accept. We’ve already been invaded a couple times more than we would have liked in this game, and we can’t really blame the more skeptical elements of the ruling Council that insist no stacks of transports be in range of our shores before we start passing out techs. If you accept the trade and pull back your transports just a bit (and keep them away) – we promise you no further delays on tech. Every future one will come with accept. :) After a turn at peace with Saber, we're now back at war with them and the bombing has resumed. We lost a few factories, and a bunch of citizens and developed tiles. We didn't end up selling them any tech (the whole reason they went to peace with us) - and since they're not responding to our letters, who knows what they're up to? Sigh, I guess this is pretty much normal for Saber's frustrating behavior though. As for our official peace treaty - we were thinking maybe 5 turns of guaranteed peace, then peace continues with a 5 turn "notification of intent to cancel" clause? We also think it might be smart for us to both sign a "no nukes, even if we go back to war" treaty so we can both race for space without fear of those nasty things. What do you think? To a brighter future… and world where blue (of one shade or the other) reigns supreme, The Council

They want us to move back our Transports, which is reasonable. To maybe 8 tiles offshore?

EDIT:
I don't think they gave the game to us. They are cagey enough to figure out a way to launch before we get all the techs we need to do the same. We might be able to launch if Saber focuses on them, but once Saber focuses on us, The Council can easily sneak off the planet.

Dear Wise People of The Council,

While we know that only dire circumstances would allow you to consider gifting us with the ability to reach the stars, victory is not in our hands. Even as you help us, you plan and play to win and it appears to us that you still can.

Although I wonder what would happend if we both completed our spaceships on the same turn?

Anyway, we have moved our Transports 2NE of their former location, so they are now 8 tiles away from your shores. We have attached a screenshot of their location, along with their escorts.

And your fisherman are always welcome aboard our ships!

Five turns of peace is acceptable, too.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Wise People of The Council,

Our own wise men are rejoicing in the gifts you sent us. Some are speaking gibberish to each other, spouting out such phrases as "qem pa' lIj Heghpu'", "jIH 'oH ghobe' Heghpu'" and "pagh DIchDaq juS". Others are swinging colored plastic rods at each other while chanting "Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age". Some (but not enough!) have even begun to bathe regularly.

And many more have begun carrying around a stuffed animal, a hippopotamus I believe, that when squeezed makes a rather loud, socially unacceptable noise; the kind of sound not mentioned, much less emitted, in the company of the fairer sex.

While it is very nice that our learned people finally have some life about them, they have begun to go absolutely daft at the idea of leaving this planet now, today, this instant. They do not seem to grasp that amount of planning and scheduling that must accompany such a massive endeavor.

If all these techy folks are alike, your situation with them must be much more difficult than ours. How do you handle their unhinged demands to defy the laws of known physics to grant their wishes immediately?

We thank you greatly for your recents of knowledge, including the knowledge of changing the colors of garments. Even in the darkest times people still want to look stylish and fancy.

We also sent to you 500 gold, in a separate transaction from the one that was sent to us. We know you will use it wisely.

Onward, to the stars!

Recieved from The Council on December 28, 2009, while they held Turn 288. Not seen until January 4, 2010, when we got Turn 288 from Saber. I've reformatted the message to make it easier to read.

Dear Brothers in Blue,

Thanks for your note! It's good to hear from you... believe it or not we were just preparing a friendly "hey, we're still alive" note to send you. Sorry we’ve been so quiet lately… we’d like to officially blame the slow pace of the game and General “didn’t I officially retire from my post? No? Erm, sorry about that chaps”_W We're happy to accept your 500 gold for Dyes and Advanced Flight deal. What a joy to deal with reasonable people :D Also, now that we've transferred all the necessary tech, we wanted to officially wish you good luck in the space race. :salute:

In other news: There’s not much new to report on our side… Saber somehow continues to find things to bomb in our lands… we keep thinking it’s all been destroyed, until we get the battle logs and find out there are a few buildings and non-cratered tiles we apparently forgot about. Heavy sigh. Oh - if you could keep an eye out for any Saber transports in the ocean between our lands and SABER's mainland, that would be enormously helpful. Our early warning and surveillance network has been almost totally destroyed by the bombing, and we're a bit blind and vulnerable in that area. It would be tragic to have SABER sneak out a domination victory at this point. With each stealth bomber that flies over our land, we feel even more positive about our decision to gift you all the space techs in exchange for peace. If we can’t be the ones to rocket out of this war-torn waterworld- then we at least want to be here to see the looks on the smug orange faces when you do. :nya:

So yeah – this letter is just to say that we’re alive, semi-responsive, and wishing you luck.

Your brothers in blue to the end,

Dear Wise (yet Weary) People of The Council,

No one has been especially chatty during the 280s. Lots of things going on in that big blue room with the very high ceiling and poor temperature control. And not too much going on in-game, either. Important stuff, yes, but hardly exciting.

We have sent you some screenshots we took of Saber ships off your coastline. Feel free to check our math, but we spotted
  • 10 Carrier
  • 04 Battleship
  • 15 Cruiser
  • 09 Destroyer
  • 20 Transport

In other places we spotted a Nuke Sub and another Destroyer.

We did not find the last three Transports we know exist and we missed many Destroyers. This is worrisome for many reasons. While Saber is still focused the Dark Blue Threat, their Orange minds won't ignore the Baby Blue Boys forever. If we do get off this place before you (possible, but not probable) it will only be because Saber considered The Council the bigger threat.

We saw that Saber invaded and then they got back into their boats and went into international waters for no reason we can see. Off-shore gambling, perhaps?

Whatever their reason, the end is coming, so build well!

Dear Wise People of The Council,

Saber is definetly focused on Free. We can find 23 of their 24 transports and all 23 are sailing into our territorial waters. Two are aiming at the small island between our fair nations and 18 are 6 south of Fortress of Meleet with 3 more not very far away.

We expect a battle log with the next game turn.

While the unblinking eye of Sauron Saber is gazing at Free, now is the time for you to grab victory quickly, if you can.

So were not going to win are we.

So were not going to win are we.
That remains to be seen.

We won't be able to sneak off the planet, which is what I hoped would happen. And so did The Council. Now, maybe they can.

It ain't over yet.

but don't we want us to win and not Council?

Yes, but they gave us the techs to get to space because they didn't think they could. The Council would rather us win than Saber. And we would rather The Council win than Saber.

I don't know if The Council can get that last part built in the next few turns. All we done is give them a heads-up; it is up to them to take advantage of it.

I know we would rather have council win than Saber, but would we want us to win instead of Council?
