There is now a thread to express yourself if you have remarks and ideas:

Welcome to the Deity Challenge Line-up!

- The spreadsheet of all challenge finishers to date has been updated and is available here.

Rules:

  • New games will be posted every 10 days.
  • All the games in this series are set to Deity difficulty.
  • User civilizations, maps, and opponents change with each challenge, but the game speed is always set to Standard and the starting era is always Ancient.
  • We try for a variety of starts
  • This isn't a competition so there will be no predefined victory conditions.
  • If you complete 5 challenges, your name will be added to the 'Top Finishers' list.
When posting about your victory, please begin the post with the turn number and Victory Condition in bold letters - e.g. T247 DiploV (this is so the person who updates the spreadsheet can see it more easily)
  • We welcome all comments and write-ups and invite you to post screenshots of key moments and the moment of victory (if you are successful), but please use the spoiler tag if you post a picture, make a comment about which civs are in the game, or about wonders, or locations of ancient ruins, etc.
  • In short, if it’s information you can only know by playing the game, don’t spoil it for others by divulging this information in the open. Thank you for your co-operation

If you want to share a map please send Acken a private message.

Please note that maps you wish to share MUST have map packs disabled, so those who do not have them can enjoy the challenge. To do this, you MUST go into the DLC option from the Main Menu and untick the options ‘Scrambled Nations’, ‘Explorers Map Pack’ and ‘Scrambled Continents’. You will need to do this EVERY TIME you start a new game, or just simply delete the map packs from your computer.

Quick question for anyone that knows, before I start playing this one:

Q: When playing as Korea, is it worth planting Great Scientists for the UA?

Let's do the math:

If we are going for a SV a GS as Korea probably brings in like 10k beakers

An Academy brings in 12 base(+2 after ST + 2 after AT), won't look like we would be getting a Observatory here. So it's 14(We prob won't get to use the 2 from AT properly)+7(Researchlab) +7 University(with upgrade from rationalism later) +7 from NC. So that's 35. I think going with 25 on average as we obviously won't have researchlabs etc. for the full duration would probably be fair.

If we pop 11(7 normal 2 Hubble 2 faith ) GS that would be 35*8*11 extra science = 3080 Beakers + probably a 100 turns of working it at 25 science = 2500 beakers

So it's 5580 Beakers vs 10k. I'd say it's fairly close and it probably wouldn't be a mistake either way. I most definitely wouldn't plant more than one.

You could just use my spreadsheet in that other thread on academy discussion and put your values in it.

I'd say 1 is definetely worth it, 2 is probably also good.

I'd try plant plant bulb plastics, then keep the rest for reaching rocketery and last techs.

Those plants and bulb are in the 8K area... but it will help you smooth your production queue.

Definitely ditching the 2nd Gem in favor of the Mountain :)

I will perhaps OCC this one.. (are the extra setting for AI such that OCC is not possible?)

"are the extra setting for AI such that OCC is not possible?"

I don't know. I had a great start with 4 cities, now floundering. A couple of AIs have runaway, but not sure how much that is due to the starting bonuses or not.

I would wager that OCC is tougher on this map than on Siam, or at least as tough, because
Spoiler :
the three main threats are the heavy expansionist types.

Spoiler :
T 246 SV, just zapped through the game. I've never got raped so badly early game, it was disgusting. There was this one Barb camp I was fighting for like 70 turns. One of my settlers got stolen by Barbs and Shaka was quite the nice guy as you can see on the right on the picture. I also ed up with Pisa and in the end I overshot the Science and had a GS left which was really dumb. So pretty sure ~210 SV is possible, lower is gonna be hard as you will have happiness problems.

Spoiler :

Ooh, OCC might be a tick impossible to pull off what with everyone around being an absolute psycho

Yeah I second this - the dirt looks better to.

You keep the deer and get access to the sheep and a cattle so your first 3 population will be very productive!

Games are up so fast, I love it! But I was still not happy with my Austrian runs... I will work on this one first, as it looks like more fun.

...won't look like we would be getting a Observatory here.

??? Mountain in opening SS for T2 cap (on hill with river no less). Is that not worth it? But how does having an observatory change your conclusion? Plant one more GS?

I wasn't sure how to play the sparse resources.

Spoiler :
So, I turtled with three cities and played a painful low growth game into the 220s while the brown slowly encircled my borders. Around turn 200, I actually took the tech lead, but my beakers are stuck around 600 and its no fun hitting next, next, next. Therefore, resign.

Why low growth Budweiser? Limited by happiness? I'll admit it's been my main problem, but that's where the CS manipulation can really make a difference. Had I ignored the CS, I think this map would have been unwinnable by domination.

T220 Update

This domination business is hard. I hit Dynamite T150 - a new record, I think. :) Took out the immediate neighbours pretty swiftly but then spent 50+ turns wading through
Spoiler :
spear-throwers
and their accompanying cannons and lancers. Far Western AI has Bombers, so he could be slow going, and the Northern and North-Eastern AIs are those I've been trading and bribing all game. Solid friendships, several RAs a piece from them, but it ain't gonna be pretty when I finally backstab them. They've grown into monsters of their own. I also feel that attacking
Spoiler :
Monty now (just cuz he's in the vicinity of Oda)
could be a mistake, and he might be better left for later. But when I actually backstab, and my reputation is completely gone diplomatically, I could be looking at a 6-way DoW (since I've left everyone alive this time), and that wouldn't be pretty.

c- I usually had happiness because I paid gold for luxuries from AI every chance I got. It was mostly the terrain. I did poor job at managing food in the cap and before I knew it, it was too late.

I wish I had gotten busy with the H'wachas.

Promoting hwachas from mass AI unit swarms are always a good thing. Its too bad you missed out on them.

??? Mountain in opening SS for T2 cap (on hill with river no less). Is that not worth it? But how does having an observatory change your conclusion? Plant one more GS?

Yeah I went to the mountain as well was a bit tired yesterday. Don't think I would plant more than one.

Spoiler :
That game was really really awkward for me, I had super super late Education and ended up getting a GE from Wonders I build. Then I ended up greeding and didn't use it for Pisa and missed pisa barely. I played that so terrible, I prob try again tonight and see how low I can go.

What wonders, specifically, work for the UA?

I have already reloaded. T3 the spot I pick first I get the message about being too close to another city!

Only wonders that directly give Science are affected by the UA. So no hubble/Porcelain.

I personally like Hanging Gardens and then getting your specialistslots filled really early.

With the excess food from hanging gardens, making specialists will be no problem.
