I do not have Civ 3 (waiting for a computer upgrade) but I had an idea. With Shakespears Theater could you turn workers into riflemen? If the theatre stops unhappy people and you are a government that allows the draft could you not take any caputered work adn have them join htre city and then turn around and draft them? With the theatre you wold not get the unhappiness and either. This could also work to rush other units 9and buildings) thus turing a city with the theare into a slave camp of sorts. While I doubt this would be good with a despotism later in the game, it could be very useful with a communist government. Do I have something wornf here?

Shakespeare's only prevents 8 people from being unhappy... I guess that means you can draft up to 8 more people with shakespeare's than you could otherwise... It's a decent idea, if you can spend all that time researching free artistry and building the dang thing :king:

That's an interesting thought.

As for Free Artistry and the Theatre...well, I don't think I've ever bothered to go for it directly (that is, unless I'm head and shoulders above the computer). Pick the city in which you want it, start building a palace, and when the screen pops up saying "X is building the Shakespeare's Theatre," arrange a nice little trade. This is usually right around the point when civs start to build harbors, get navigation and such, and you can often trade some much needed luxuries or resources for the optional techs that you need.

On the other hand, Civs will pay a pretty penny for Free Artistry. It's one of those techs that can yield 20-40 gold per turn and whatever's in the bank. When you're reasonably confident that you'll get the wonder, turn around and sell the tech to everyone on the map. While you're at it, sell them democracy. For the next 20 turns, you'll have enough gold to research the last few Middle Ages techs in four turns each and still build up the bank account. Incidentally, this works well for other "optional" techs that only yield wonders, such as Music Theory and Economics.

It is my experience that if you make many per turn deals the computer forgets to cancel them on regent I think I had one going on for 200 turns

Maybe AI is getting a good deal... No reason to cancel a good deal. You in other hand can always try to get that deal better one for yourself. Depents on how much AI has income and money in store... ;)
