I was also a "Combat Promo" fan in the beginning, but I have lately started to learn that it is usually better to at least in some degree specialize your soldiers. After I changed my "promotion style" to this new style, my warfare has improved alot.

i think the main benefit of first strikes is not to improve your chance of winning the battle but rather to leave you with more health after the combat(from having taken less hits)....you still have to be favoured to win without the strikes though
