Hmm from many of these posts I get the impression that the judical system of western democracies seems to be quite unpopular.

I don't really see why though..

They deserve the same punishment as any other other rapist and/or murderer. How would it be justice for different people to get different punishments for similar crimes? When we act on emotion we punish unfairly because some crimes make us angrier than others.

We aren't punishing them to make ourselves feel better. We punish criminals so society can function and using barbaric punishments doesn't help a civilized society.

I'd imagine that's because punishment is not an efficient deterrent. Of course, it's one of the better ones we have now, but clearly it's not working as well (for sex offenders) as it works for other crimes.

Still, I figure these guys should be forced to be involved in the process of finding a cure for their victims. If they cannot sufficiently fund the research, they should be guninea pigs.

An eye for an eye will make him blind, while you will still be able to see.

The punishment must fit the crime, it doesn't have to be exactly like the crime.

Ah but that's another problem entirely. I agree that our current judicial system is not perfect for sex offenders, but I don't think vigilante revenge is the answer.

The punishment must fit the crime, it doesn't have to be exactly like the crime.

Prison isn't fun but it isn't hard either with that cable TV and all. Don't believe the Hollywood hype. Prison isn't all shankings and butt rape. Most of it is just sitting around wasting time between meals. Not fun not hard just boring.

I don't, the judge/jury does, according to the law. If you're asking me for what the law should say about a man blinding another man eye, well I can't answer like that. It's not specific enogh, did he intend to or was it by accident? Who started the fight? Did he use a weapon? Does he has any mental illness, etc etc.

That's why a court takes hours and hours to listen to evidence, they don't just throw a one liner that someone commited somecrime.

But you're acting on emotions: anger, hate, passion... Justice acts on reason.

It matters a whole lot because if we say revenge is the way to go we're no better than the criminals since we're doing the exact same thing we've condemned them for.

I'm agreeing with Masquerouge here. You guys remember "two wrongs don't make a right"? As tempting as it is to demand that terrible things be done to these criminals, that won't help anything. Temper your temper.

However, I support surgical castration for serious sex offenders.
