The Chinese aren't exactly pleased that their former protégé is murdered and last night they were going to suspend imports of coal from Best Korea,

The conflict between the Catholic Church and the government of the Philippines is, meanwhile, quickly escalating. :S

Ya the police killed a South Korean businessman and now the pres has a war on rogue cops. Its hard to keep track sometimes. So the support is falling off and the church is emboldened and had a march. Go in and win church.

Pushing his claim is only possible after a DOW on North Korea, in that case, Kim III is already lost. So he just assassinated his brother for marginal gains.

It is not even how medieval politics goes. Removing a pretender is useful against foes at similar power, not some small duke assassinated his brother to avoid a neighbor big kingdom to push his brother's claim. The big kingdom can always find CBs for that in case it needs a CB.

    The new administration's first challenge to the Nine-Dash-Line;

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats...uth-china-sea.html?via=desktop&source=copyurl

The U.S. is sending an aircraft carrier to the South China Sea, ignoring warnings from China which views such patrols as a violation of its sovereignty. The U.S. Navy said in a statement that the deployment of the USS Carl Vinson was a “routine operation,” but Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said Beijing “firmly opposes any country’s attempt to undermine China’s sovereignty and security in the name of the freedom of navigation and overflight.” China says it holds claim to most of the disputed waters, and has been constructing islands equipped with military weaponry. The country has long urged the U.S. against getting involved in its disputes over the waters with other nations.

We face south in the central Philippines with some large hills between us and the worst case scenario. If they start something nuclear up north I think we'll survive. Dunno if it went global. China has theoretically got 200 nukes and building fast, so I doubt they could end the world. Make a hell of a mess though. Hope they just all use harsh language and complain a lot.

China nuking Philippines is unimaginable, how would some island disputes become genocide? Basically it is like Princip started WWI by killing the Archduke.

Gavrilo Princip triggered a war because everyone was spoiling for a fight. What are the real positions and wishes of the states in the Sinosphere?

You are such a Chinese advocate by claiming the South China Sea area "Sinosphere" :mischief: , in this day of age, Sinosphere is basically China and Taiwan, no other countries can be qualified as in Sinosphere.

PRC's goal is to create a "Sinosphere" where they can do what they want without being too worried about the US or other powers' actions. The thought of having their exports disturbed if the US navy puts sticks in their machinery is terrifying to the Communist Party, as their legitimacy the last decades is based on giving their people more wealth in a growing economy, "making China great again" and the "Chinese dream" etc. If China's leadership is humiliated in its foreign affairs, it could cause them to lose face/legitimacy or anger the population, so we have interesting times ahead of us.

Wasn't thinking of China nuking the Philippines, but more the various navies nuking each other, and we being collateral. However no, you're right, seems unlikely it will get that close. At worst we get some fallout. I think the winds generally come up from the south though.

The historical attitude by the Chinese ruling elites has been that everybody is a vassal of the Chinese Emperor and they just haven't realised yet. It's not completely as if even the Communists could remove such a mindset altogether.

The latest buzz is that somebody tried to steal Kim Jong-nam's corpse from the morgue in Malaysia; meanwhile, the government states that they cannot return the body unless a relative claims it in person. I need an English source for this.

Change of guard in Japan, it seems.
Japan's next emperor announces readiness for Akihito to abdicate
Crown Prince Naruhito turns 57 and says he will share ‘pain and joy of the people’ like his father, who wants to step down due to old age and illness (…)
The key problem is that the Emperor is not legally allowed to abdicate. I suppose they'll pass a special bill to allow it in the end.
    Thanks, plarq!

The powers and responsibilities of the Son of Heaven are described in the Constitution of Japan, dating to 1947.

Dear Japan, just skip straight to first empress and save us all this drama, Thanks
This whole succession business seems to be rather obessive I'd imagine as the older generation die off, newer generation will be more open to these progressive ideas

IMHO, Kim was thinking that, if NK goes to hell in a handbasket, China might want to replacement him with a competent Kim. The assassination removes that option.

Since there has been a nephew born to the currently future emperor that should be no problem.
That is a good possible cause. It also reinforces his reputation, internally, because he can order anybody killed, even outside Best Korea.
