The economy is going to ruin Obama's Presidency.

Sadly his presidency is going to be ruined by a depression that is not of his making

Do you agree with this statement?

I believe the economy has to go through this drepression and correction before it can begin to grow again. Nothing Obama will do can alter this. Thus he will get blamed and not get a second term. I think this is sad because he can do so much else.

Why checkbox? Shouldn't this be multiple choice?

The poll is pretty stupid, but the discussion doesn't have to be.

If its stupid why did you make it like that? Anyway the question is OK. And yes I think those who wish Obama to fail will use the econmic crisis to point the finger of blame. Maybe not his fault but the mud will stick no matter what he does. For my part I hope he does enough in other ways to deflect such blame. But probably not.

I think Obama may be the new teflon president and he may get just enough patience, especially if the gop picks a crappy candidate like Sarah Palin.

The only thing it will ruin is his ability to focus on his other campaign promises. It couldn't really get much worse, and any improvements will be credited to his administration.

If there's going to be a recession at all, I think Obama got it at the best possible timing; at a point where it was already patently obvious to everyone what was up before Bush stepped down, and with a full three years to see it turn around (hopefully) before he needs to start thinking about reelection.

Of course, if it doesn't turn around he's dead meat. But in modern economics and politics alike three years is a loooong time. Maybe it shouldn't be, but it is.

There's 1-2 more bad years, then he'll get the credit when things improve.

Not sure it's fair to say that this wsn't of his making. He helped cause it by marching in lockstep with Bush on economic policies...both parties in the House and the Senate Republicans wanted to crack down on Fannie/Freddie and the derivatives market. W and the Senate Democrats said there was no problem.

If Obama is competent at one thing it is personal marketing. He will make sure everyone understands the recession isn't his fault. In fact he already started to make statements about how horribly bad things are now and how painful are the times ahead exactly to keep expectations low and indirectly tell people "it's not my fault".

Now, this doesn't mean that he'll have an easy time in 2012. If the economy doesn't improve, he will get at least part of the blame no matter what. Plus americans will by then have realised that he is just another politician, not someone who would radically change the ways of DC.

How about,

No, the economy will rebound on its own without much help from President Hopechange

A mixture of the first two. Obama is not God, but powerful nonetheless. He won't be able to soften the blow, but perhaps will be able to speed up the restoration process.

But the crisis and the US' huge dept will probably make it more difficult for him to fight other problems quickly and effectively.

I'm fairly certain that Fox News is already blaming Obama for the economy.

Speaking of which, Jon Stewart had some choice words to say about Fox's presidential inauguration coverage:

1/21 - The Daily Show 13:15 in...

(Sorry, but you have to sit through a couple of obnoxious commercials to see it...)

Let it go. He's gone. If you love an administration, set it free. If it comes back. we are all moving to Canada.
