The future of China's relationship with the West.

1.2 million soldier in China came from more than 1.2 billion people. With the same ratio America will have less than 300,000 troops, Britain like 60.000, Germany 80,000? (sounds like less than what they were allowed after WWI) Anyways China is trying to cut personel but upgrade equipment, the number of soldiers is not even the point by themselves.

Now to the 'high tech' stuff where China should be banned for life. Mm, what do you want China to do ? Buy western equipment? (oops, can't buy any from most countries) or just wait there and see how America and rest of the world developes all these third generation, forth generation fancy stuff and do nothing. Real logic and real possible.

The world these days is all about high tech, countries live or die on high tech, any country with the ability will develope high tech, nobody want's low tech. I think this is common sense.

On one hand people say Chinese millitary is too advanced and aggressive, on the other hand they say their equipment are in the 50's and can't beat an island so close to it. Pretty interesting.

The reason they cant beat Taiwan is political as well as miltary. They lack the amphibous assets to get across the straits as well as an invasion of Tawiann would most likely bring the US

Most Chinese equipment is junk.
The bulk of their fighters consist of '60s design j-6 copied from the mig-19. There are plans to junk most of these in the next few years. They do have a few advanced squadrons of Su-27s and Su-30s, but they are not fully equipped or trained. Besides, Chinese pilots get not more than 180-200 hours flying a year. The Indian Air Force gievs its pilots 230-280 hours of flying a year. Western countries little over 300.
Of their submarines, a large number are outdated ming and romeo subs which will be no match against the Taiwanese or Japanese navy. Plus they do not have an Aircraft carrier. They are some distance away from becoming a blue-water navy as well.
Their army, while it will look impressive going by numbers, is not all that great when ground realities are examined.
Firstly, most are poorly trained, illiterate peasants, who were conscripted keeping in mind human wave tactics. Such tactics fell flat against a small foe loke Vietnam in the 70s and will meet an even shorter end against a tank, artillery and air barrage. The Army is unable to attract the best coming out of China's universities, most of whom go to the burgeoning pvt. sector and MNCs.
Most of its armour is outdated. Roughly 70% are 50s vintage and the rest a mixture of 60s, 70s and 80s designs. IT does not have anything comparable to a M1A2 or a Leopard II and will have to depend heavily on Russia for tech.

The only way China can pose a serious threat is with its nukes, nuclear subs and ICBMs. In a conventional war, China will not last very long if it is the aggressor.

That's why they're upgrading them.

Furthermore, you do not seem to realize that a 1.2 million man army is built solely to be offensive in nature, as it can absorb massive losses that no other military in the world could match man-for-man

I think China knows that shear number won't do much good. They know about Gulf War I. (when Iraq had the fourth largest military by size)

China's research into high-tech military equipment is focussed on ways to defeat U.S. weapons, so we would be forced to fight a conventional war that we could not possibly win.

If you're going to upgrade your military equipments, what good is it to upgrade them to be just good enough to beat Mexico. If you're going to upgrade your countries weapons you might as well aim for making it capable of beating the best, because otherwise it would just be a waste.
