The Gamecube Thread

Uh, the whole Gamecube is too kiddy for people to buy,

I can't believe you said that, Mr. "Loves his Gamecube". Purple is a lousy color, but its available in black too, isn't it? Nintendo has gone out of its way lately to get more mature-looking games, but it doesn't seem to be helping sales very much.
Pikmin seems to provide an example of how creativity can be so neglected by the general public. *sigh* If only my fellow Americans didn't seem so shallow...

Sorry, but it's true. Believe me, I hate hearing it just as much as you do. But if you think what I just said isn't true, then you have no idea how stupid this generation of gamers is. There is no way Nintendo will ever bypass Sony in sales. Nintendo has gone from colorful graphics to "teh kiddie" and people look down on franchises such as Zelda just because there is no a) blood, or b) strip clubs. Seems that a few dots of red is everything these days. You have no idea how many people were making fun of the Gamecube when it was discovered that Splinter Cell had its blood removed, despite the fact that it was Ubi Soft's decision and it's a stealth game so there's hardly any blood in there anyway.

But that doesn't matter, with the world as stupid as it is, people like us should be glad Nintendo exists and is making a huge profit. As long as Nintendo stays, we'll get our games where gameplay matters more than graphics. :)

Gamecube is getting burned...

I read in a newspaper article today of the stats of the three consoles. PS2 is in 17.2 million homes (or units sold, can't remember), Xbox is in 6, and Gamecube is in 4 million. By the end of the year the estimates are 28 million PS2s, 9 million Xboxes, and 6 million Gamecubes.

Wow.

Hey, Ford's still around. After having 50% of the auto market in its heyday (with over 200 other companies sharing the rest), it survived a number of bad decisions (such as not releasing a new model until after others had caught up), and its still a major company. As more corporations join the market, the Playstation will gradually shrink in market share (it may take until the PS4 to do this  ), and things will equal out.

BTW, there's an article related to how WW reflects Miyamoto's vision more so than any other game he's made, and it deals somewhat with why WW appears so 'kiddie'. Check the articles section at zeldauniverse.net

E3 rocked this year for Nintendo.

Star Fox GC! Fire Emblem! Kirby's Air Ride! Pac Man! Advance Wars 2! Metroid: Zero Mission! Super Mario Advance 4! Wind Waker selling out in Europe within seven days! Gamecube2!

And Nintendo's just warming up too... :D

Keep in mind, too, that the PS2 had a whole year on the market before GC and Xbox came along. . . that's going to do a lot for popularity, games, game development and user opinion.

Hell, I love the GC. I didn't think I'd like the little itty bitty disks, but I have been satisified with it.

Super Mario Sunshine is an interesting puzzle game. I was fond of Mario 64, and there is a lot of M64 in SMS.

I've got 007:Agent under Fire, and am looking to buy Nightfire(?) when I get a couple of extra bucks.

The PS2 is okay, and I like a lot of what it does. The graphics on a PS2 can be outstanding, and some of the games are unbeliveable. Yeah, there's a lot of blood and guts to it. . .but to a parent such as myself, that's not a really good selling point. We recently had a problem where my three year old was having just a bit too much fun running around and shooting everyone. ..well, I won't say where, but you can imagine. We had to limit his game play quite a bit and redirect him to some other games. The GC doesn't foster that kinda behavior. Sure, it's there, but with games like Godzilla Melee. . . it's not as graphic.

Personally, the 'better' graphics of a PS2/Xbox isn't a big deal for me. There are some very playable games on the GC that are worth my time, and I don't care that the graphics aren't 'lifelike.' Gameplay beats out graphics every time.

Advance Wars 2! Metroid: Zero Mission! [...] Gamecube2!

Altered you quote a bit here, but, I have a few questions for you. I know Advance Wars 2 is coming out, but is that for Gamecube? (Crosses fingers). And Metroid: Zero Mission...how far along is that in development? And Gamecube 2? When was there anything about that?

Apparently my reading of E3 coverage pales in comparison to yours...:p

@ Turner: (Sorry, my fanboy-ish traits coming to the surface) Xbox graphic's are only barely superior to Gamecube's and Gamecube's are much better than PS2's. Just look at the three versions of Splinter Cell to get a good example.

Advance Wars 2, Metroid: Zero Mission, Fire Emblem, Mario and Luigi, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario Advance 4 are all for the GBA. Sorry. ;)

Iwata said that they won't let the PS3 get a head start on them again like they did this gen. Judging by the sales PS3 probably won't come out until 2005, so Nintendo's already making plans to get the Gamecube 2 out by 2005. Can't find the link, though.

Since E3 is pretty much over, I guess I might as well start the wrap up. Although Nintendo's line up was solid (especially with George Harrison saying "Mario will never start shooting hookers") I was disappointed by no Mario 128, even more disappointed with the three pokemon games but no 3D MMORPG, and very disappointed with the two Zelda games. But since Mario 128 is probably going to be shown at Spaceworld, I guess I'm happy enough.

Otherwise, since I have a GBA, I like the GBA-GCN connectivity and think that online is overrated.
Games I'm definately getting:
Mario Kart: Double Slash
Starfox 2
Advance Wars 2 (GBA)
Super Mario Advance 4
Metroid Prime 2
Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)

Games I'm most likely getting:
Kirby's Air Ride or F-Zero (one or the other, three racers are too much)
Pac-Man
Soul Calliber II

Games I'm interested in:
Fire Emblem (GBA)
Mario & Luigi (GBA)
Geist
Warrio World
Mario Party 5
Pikimin 2
Resident Evil 4
Viewtful Joe
Sonic Adventure DX
Zelda: Four Swords & Tetra's Trackers IF they're combined and sold no more than $30

From the looks of that list, I must be a Nintendo fanboy
I don't even know much about the other systems

IF I had an Xbox
Halo 2
Conkers

IF I had a PS2
Gran Turismo 4 (it's the only game Sony showcased)
XIII
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XI
MegaMan XVII

Looks like the gameboy player and cube will be sold as one unit (likely to replace the free game incentive) when it comes out. But I'm just a little curious on the conversion rates from Euros to USDollars, take a look at the article http://www.nintendo.com/news/news_articles.jsp?articleID=8656
sounds like it'll be cheaper to buy a cube and player, and import it than it would be to just get the player stateside ;)

Having the gameboy player replace the free game incentive would decrease sales. The Gameboy Player costs 40 US dollars in Japan, so instead of getting a cube and a $50 game, you'll get a cube and a $40 piece of hardware. Although it might be sold in the US for $50, I'm not sure. The free game part will probably still be included instead of a $20 price cut like Xbox and PS2

Isn't the GCN compatible with expansion packs, like the N64? Why don't they just release things like that? And Gamecube 2 isn't a very good name, IMHO. I'd go with BTTDPS3 (Better Than That Da## PlayStation 3) :D Also, keep in mind that they may be waiting to reveal some games at Spacworld.
What's with the two Zelda games? They look like just minigames, like Mario Party. Jeez, Zelda is an adventure, not a party game.

Yeah, Gamecube 2 is just a temp name. And Nintendo's probably saved Mario 128 and the Zelda GBA game for Spaceworld.

BTW, like the avatar :D

Depends on the game. GT3 has some awesome graphics. . . there hvae been other games, I can't recall right now, where the graphics have been very life-like. It's been a while since I've played them, so I can't name names.

But one thing is certain, the longer a console is out, the better the graphics get because the developers have more time to play with it. Take a look at the Atari 2600. The early graphics were bad, even by that standard. As the console got older, the graphics got better. The PS/1 did the same thing. It's true of all of them.

I love my Gamecube (well, my kids) and it's my first choice for a game when I rent one. Yeah, the PS/2 is nice, and there's my 'puter (which is pretty much dedicated to PTW) but for a console, I like the GC best. With my kids, the 'newness' is worn off, (we've had it maybe three months now) but my four year old still goes to that one first.

Gamecube burned!

I read in an article a few days ago that Nintendo lost profit due to losing its Gamecube ground to PS2. It failed to reach its goal of 10 million Gamecubes sold, only selling some 9.6 million as of now. With Sony introducing a PSP Nintendo fears that it might lose even more ground, because its handheld business is a big thing.

From what I got, to make the most profit, Nintendo will ease out of the hardware market and focus on software more. Sounds somewhat like a Sega case - pulling the plug on hardware to stop losses.

Actually, Nintendo's just hit their goal of 10 million. Although most can dismiss Nintendo's claim at E3 that they're at second place, even Sony recognoized the Gamecube as the second place competitor. The Xbox hasn't hit the 10 million mark yet, so Gamecube should be in second place. But of course, the flames won't subside.
Also, by the time the PSP's out Nintendo could be marketing their next gameboy. Which probably will happen, so the PSP might linger around a bit, but I doubt it'll beat the GBA.

The difference is that Sega was losing money since the Genesis-the Saturn put Sega in the red, and the Dreamcast just failed. Of course, now Sega is finally getting some profits that they announced at E3 I believe. Keep in mind that Nintendo's always been making money, and if necessary they could spend it left and right like Microsoft if needed.

All this talk about sales-I think I lurk at Gamefaqs a bit too much. ;)

For the first time, Sega is in the black, which is good news.

I always thought that Xbox was ahead of Gamecube...and those stats [on the supplied link] are far different from those I read in the newspaper. Very odd.

Can I have an article on Sega making a profit?
