My anniversary with my girlfriend is coming up in a few days (1 year). I already a pretty good idea about what I'm going to do, and I've been talking with some of my friends about the some of the gifts they have received/given...nothing particularly interesting so far.

I'm wondering, what are some of the best gifts you have given/received? What made them significant?

I want to this for my Boyfriend for his Christmas present.

Find 5 songs that mean most to you and your girlfriend.

With the help of an artistically talented friend, design a five page card, each with the song lyrics of the five songs on each page, drawn in such a way that it is unique to the feeling of the song and the emotions and meaning that both of you experience.

When you give her the card, play each of the five songs and tell her what each song means to you as you slowly turn the card. Afterward, give a final gift to make feel all happy, a rose, a piece of jewelry, something handcrafted etc.

This isn't really a suggestion thread...I already have a gift picked out and an activity planned. Aronax's post was more in line of what I was looking for. What have *you* given or received, and why was that significant?

The best [material] gift ever from my girlfriend is a simple homemade Christmas card she made for me. Though I have reason (she isn't good at dropping hints in a subtle and ambiguous way) to suspect that there is a gift with something to do with J.S. Bach in the near future...

But in all seriousness, its the simple things I enjoy the most. Its not because its a card with a cute one-liner, its because its a card that she took the time to make. For me.

or maybe its because labor is the root of all value??? /mischiefyface

General gifts, or significant other gifts? I haven't given/received many of the latter...

If you're just asking about general gifts, then the best one I've given was probably taking my dad out to his first ever live NHL hockey game (Wild @ Canucks, game in which Ohlund broke Koivu's leg with a slash). He got to do something he'd always wanted to do but couldn't justify spending that much money on, and got to spend time with his daughter in the process (sports were always 'our' thing - my mom and brothers aren't much into sports).

An experience often leads to better long-term satisfaction than an object.

Whatever it is, keep it simple and make it yourself. Girls love that stuff.

Yep, for our iron anniversary I got out the tools and started hammering and welding. I had no idea what I was making. Turned out I was making this:

An Iron Butterfly! :D

This.

Best gift I ever gave someone was a scrapbook I made - with pictures and stuff of a trip we took together.

Line by line the words do flow,
Speaking things our hearts still know;
Sometimes silly, sometimes clever,
Or perhaps risqué or just ..."whatever"
Two, three or more a year,
It's what she wants and holds quite dear.
