I must admit i do like Byzantium, although you do need iron aswell as horses for the killer UU (and that one that doesn't really need replacing till cavalry).

And me, better than the Praetorian in terms of lifespam, and doens't really have a counter.

Spiritaul (half time temples) + Mysticism starting tech + Hippodrome = many :)

The Hippodrome is good, but I don't like that it doesn't allow for 2 artist specialists like a theater does. Why did they remove that aspect? Until the modern age and broadcast towers, I think the Globe Theater is the only other building that allows for artist specialists, and, of course, that only works for one city. As it is, you're forced to run caste system if you want to fight a cultural border war.

yeah, but I usually don't like GA's. I'd rather have prophets or engineers. even merchants. The only GL I'd rather not have is great spy.

Personally, I think it's an oversight. I believe they originally intended for the Hippodrome to replace the Colosseum (makes sense, right?) but for whatever reasons, replaced the Theater instead.

You know, I don't think you're going to be needing artists when you're smashing the competition under your hooves.

In general, I see the power of this UB synergises so well with what the Byzantines should be doing that the loss of 1 artist specialist is trivial. They're not geared for cultural victory, but they are geared for Empire - domination and conquest with this UB are much easier to achieve..... you practically remove the whole concept of WW.

I created a thread about this earlier. I believe (and some agreed with me, but a lot also didn't) that Firaxis denied the hippodrome artist specialists because the history of Iconoclasm in the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines went through several periods where they destroyed their art, hence repressing the artists. Consequently, Firaxis denied the Byzantine UB of the ability to work the artist specialist.

I think if they had done something like that, they'd have put a note in the pedia about it.

While I am not denying the validity of what you are saying, I tend to think that the reason is more likely to be to do with game mechanics than reality.... they only very loosely sketch reality - if they started putting historical negative factors in for 1 civ, they'd need to do it for all, surely?

Well, I think it's more just a subtle reference. Like how they give happiness for horse because the hippodromes required horses for the chariot races. I'm not denying it has to do with game mechanics, but they probably wanted to tone down the hippodrome because it was too powerful. While they brainstormed for ways to nerf it, it probably occurred to someone that the Byzantines are famous for Iconoclasm, so they figured they'd tone down the Hippodrome by not allowing Artist specialists. I don't think it's a major enough of a loss to be done solely based on game mechanics.

Hippodrome is killer!Cataphracts are awesome!Justinian is best emperor the world has ever seen!Byzantine rocks!!!
